Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Rodriguez.
Hi Kevin, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been around music since I was a kid, it has always been a part of me. When my dad was younger, he was a breakdancer, even though I didn’t get to witness him in his prime, the passion for dance never left him. On the other hand, my mom used to dance jazz and salsa. My sister and I grew up dancing at all the family parties, learning different moves from our parents but eventually ended up steering away from 80s rock and reggaeton. Instead, I fell in love with hip hop. The 808 drums and production of it all was very new to me. Along with the swag that the rappers had, spitting different flows and melodies in their rhymes, I found it very intriguing. As I enrolled into junior high, I decided to sign up for band so that I can join the drum line. I realized quickly that I was pretty good at it. I took learning how to read music and performing at events very seriously which landed me in first chair for most of the time that I was there. I won multiple awards such as outstanding musician of the year and director’s award. Fast forward to sophomore year, I started to create beats on my iPhone. Although I enjoyed spending hours cooking up different instrumentals, they felt very empty without a voice. So, I decided to practice writing music by rapping on them. I made many songs for fun using my phone and recording in other friends’ studios. Several actually caught traction on Soundcloud racking up thousands of views. When 2017 came around I decided to take music a little more seriously and built my own home studio where I’ve recorded 2 of my albums so far. My latest being N.Y.T.S (Not Your Typical Sound) which can be found on all music streaming services. Since then, I’ve also performed at many different venues for shows and competition. Whichever it is, I’m always going to have the time of my life when I’m on stage, giving it my all with one hell of a performance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was smooth for the most part because I feel like nothing in life should be forced or rushed. If something is truly meant for you, it will always come back. Attending band all of middle school came to an abrupt halt as I was moving up to high school. I was forced to make a decision. Either marching band or football. I chose football due to the passion I had for it at the time. I wanted to be great at it so I couldn’t let myself get distracted trying to juggle both. I missed music so much though that during my senior year I started recording music again with the little extra free time I had. My second obstacle was college. My parents felt that college was more important than writing rhymes so I ended up turning my full focus over to studying books and took a break from recording music. That didn’t last cause after doing my basics for a while I could never pick a career that I truly desired. My mind kept falling back to music at the end of the day so that’s what I ended up going for. I completed my fall semester of college and decided to spend my spring making songs for my first album and the rest is history. Now the only obstacle I face on the daily is how competitive the music industry is and how expensive it is to be at the top. Nothing comes easy in life and nobody great became that in a couple years. My hard work and determination will pay off with consistency and when the time comes, I WILL be at the top of the charts.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work at Peloton and I’m also a recording artist. I’m really big into fitness and health so working for Peloton has been a fun and reposeful journey. We socialize with many customers and it’s been a blessing to be able to inspire, teach, and motivate others in their journey to better health. I specialize in songwriting, performing, and dancing. I’m known for my performing and lyricism. I’m most proud of my songwriting. I take pride in never having a ghostwriter ‘cause I get asked that question a lot. What sets me apart from others is my motivational songwriting, versatility in genres that I can create, and intense dancing while performing. For a rapper that’s not common.
What do you think about happiness?
Putting a smile on someone’s face. Since the beginning of time, I’ve always loved to see people smile and laugh, and when it was because of something I said or did it made it that much more special to me. That’s when I realized that I was born to be an entertainer. My happiness is based on making others happy. You have to love what you’re doing though. I learned quickly to never put someone else’s happiness over mine if it was hurting myself or others. I found many ways to bring joy to the people around me but what better way to do it than making a career out of it. Music gives me the most happiness, so my goal is to inspire and entertain millions through my creations.
