Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Connelly, the owner of Ethos Media.
Ethos Media started in early 2013 as owner Devin Connelly began to branch out from internships and informal training in the video industry into his own work.
Devin, set up the story for us, tell us more about Ethos.
Ethos Media’s core competencies revolve around our belief in timely and consistent communication with our clients and new inquiries, which we also endeavor to respond to the same day, when possible. We also apply both years of personal experience improving our production process and talent brought in from both on-camera professionals and even competitors of ours behind the camera. Experience with using DSLR or mirrorless cameras for video eventually translated into photography expertise, which we have proudly been offering for years as well.
There’s hardly a video under the sun we haven’t worked on at some point, which has enabled us to think creatively and practically when it comes to both estimating our projects’ budgets and recommending ways clients can produce a ROI from video. Often times with marketing videos, we produce alternative versions of the primary production to cater to viewers on different types of online platforms. We also both draft and edit content based on both the client’s goals and method of broadcast.
The videos we have produced a lot of come from live events, which invariably led to the introduction of professional live streaming through our Tricaster system. This device has enabled multi-camera shoots with on-screen graphic and pre-recorded video material integration that can rival the production quality of any TV broadcast.
As of late, we’ve been offering consultation on live streaming to a fair number of churches that have been forced to move their services online due to COVID-19 regulations. We hope that even after people return to normal event attendance that live streaming will remain an integral part of any event due to the practical benefits and cost-savings it can provide to geographically distant viewers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think few people would attest to self-employment being easy, but for someone like me with little marketable experience and practical knowledge in 2013, it was the only option to stay in the industry. I can attest to it not being easy to wear all the different hats of production, but that did make me appreciate the value of working with other people and approaching each project with as large of a team as the budget would practically allow.
Over time, the quality of our productions improved and that continues today. As new technology becomes available at relatively affordable pricing, so too will they be available to the small and mid-sized business instead of just large corporations.
As of writing this article, our biggest challenge is overcoming the economic shutdown brought on by COVID-19, which has locked up marketing budgets and cancelled virtually every event for months now. Virtual events are now a thing, but the surge of conferencing software usage has enabled many companies to bypass the need for professional video services, even though the image, audio, and content quality differences are significant.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My opinion is that as long as each person involved is doing a little bit beyond the day-to-day operations to advance the company, we’ll be a long-term success. That little bit of extra effort can manifest in a variety of ways, but it takes discipline and accountability to ensure that even those (sometimes) baby steps happen on a consistent basis.
I also believe that it’s important to continue to modify the message that’s being communicated to both current and potential new clients so that our story remains relevant to their bottom line. Video is a powerful and effective tool if used in the right way, at the right time, and in the right scenario, so it’s our job to get that point across to the business world.
