Today we’d like to introduce you to Hamid Hesami.
Hi Hamid, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Tehran, Iran in 1993 and spent my entire childhood there. In November of 2010, three months after I turned 17, I moved with my family to Texas. Almost immediately after immigrating to the country, I started college for graphic design and since then I have been doing freelance work.
In the winter of 2020, I moved to Costa Rica for 6 months to work as a volunteer at an Ashram. I had decided to pursue a lifestyle that incorporated a significant amount of meditation in pursuit of more peace in myself, so I dropped everything in the states and began my journey of self-discovery. It was at this Ashram that I met my girlfriend, Alyssa. We both worked in their sustainable greenhouse early in the morning, meditated nearly 2 and a half hours each day as part of our schedule, and hung out together in whatever time we could find. Eventually, this strong friendship connection and bond we shared turned into a unique love story. When Alyssa left the Ashram after her 6 months of volunteering, I stayed another 3 months to finish my term. After this, I went to Mexico to live with a friend for another month. I fell deeply in love with the Mexican culture and lifestyle, but still felt compelled to return to the US.
So, after being apart for 5 months to pursue our own passions, Alyssa and I decided to team up again and travel the country in a converted Honda Odyssey minivan that we lovingly named “Ithaca” in honor of Homer’s Odyssey. Now, after being a lone traveler, I’m spending almost all of my waking and sleeping hours with her while exploring this beautiful country. We go from town to town and experience life like I never had before, meeting other kind travelers and locals.
I am passionate about art and music and I enjoy throwing parties and cooking for people. I consider myself a spiritual person but don’t really follow any specific religion. That being said I love studying about different religions and incorporating the teachings that resonate with me into my life.
Alyssa and I still meditate together (almost) every single morning and thank the Universe for our beautiful life on the open road. We will continue to make our way out west and from there go where the wind takes us.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I have encountered many struggles along the way. There are unique challenges that come from growing up in a country like Iran. Iran is ruled under the iron fist of a dictatorship regime and it definitely makes life a lot harder than it should be for many people. I grew up in a middle-class family. We lived in different apartments in Tehran (an expensive city) and could get by with both of my parents working full time. I lived there until I was 17 and then moved to the US. I went from living in a bustling, big city, to a quiet suburb and in a matter of a few days my life completely changed. I went through a massive culture shock for a few years and struggled to communicate and find friends. Adopting to the culture of this country proved much harder than I though it would be when I fantasized about living in America. I went through many years of trial and error to get a hang of things and understand the lay of the land.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional graphic designer by trade, but I also dabble in fine arts and photography. Currently, I work remotely from our van/home on the road. I’m most proud of my photography skills. I’m expanding my knowledge to eventually open up my own mobile studio where I would paint, design, and take pictures.
What do you think about happiness?
Making people laugh. it’s in my DNA
