Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Brown.
Hi Billy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
In my pursuit to locate the perfect cup of coffee, I was watching “Ted Talks” and the subject was fresh coffee. The segment was about the importance of fresh coffee, and it got me to thinking about if I’ve ever had a fresh cup of coffee. That began my journey of roasting my own coffee. I did research on roasting and decided to jump in headfirst by spending $40 dollars on a popcorn popper. I made a contraption in my backyard with that popcorn popper and an old gas grill. I then passed out o couple bags of coffee to co-workers for free. Until someone asked me how much will I charge. Since it was some of the best coffee they have had. That was my first customer. For there I searched for local farmer’s markets. And chose Grand Prairie the city I call home. So, every weekend for the past four years. I sold my single-origin small-batch roasted coffees. And every weekend the question would be asked Billy you need to open your own shop. And with the local support of the community my vision for coffee is on full display
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe it’s been a Great start for me. The city and community are really showing support for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, I roast all the coffees for the shop/business. I think as small operation that sets me apart. I focus on the origins of coffee to bring out coffee-flavored coffee. My goal is to elevate coffee to the status like craft beer and distillers or winemakers. With the knowledge that all coffee begins as a coffee cherry.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My Wife of course who has pushed and championed me all the way. We I began I used the business name Apprentice Coffee. And one night she asked me how long would I be an apprentice. And the light was turned on to push myself even further. That’s why the name Billie Joe Coffee Co. Now everything this has my name on it so it’s personal.
