Meet Bobby Quinten of To A Better Place Executive Coaching in Mansfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Quinten.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bobby. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For over 20 years, I have worked the corporate life, helping others through Learning and Development. As I grew older, I began to assess what I wanted to do with the final years of my life. How could I best use all of my talents, expertise, and gifts to help others professionally and personally? I turned to Executive and Professional Coaching as a way to synergize my life experiences to date and put them to the best possible use. So, at the tender age of 59, I went back to college, enrolling in the Graduate Certificate program for coaching at UTD. In November 2017, I passed my oral exam and received my certificate. While remaining in the corporate world, I also am launching my new practice, To A Better Place, and I look forward to spending the rest of my life helping leaders find their better place.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Going back to school while maintaining my day job definitely was a challenge. My team members at work and my wife at home made sacrifices to allow me the time, focus, and energy needed to get through the work. I deeply respect any older adult who goes back to college while working and taking care of a family. My job necessarily includes travel, so over the last year, I’ve taken online classes in six different time zones and during a plane flight. In the end, it was all worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
To A Better Place is committed to providing future-oriented, solutions-focused, strengths-based coaching for leaders and their teams. This style of coaching sets me apart because it focuses less on where you have been and more on where you want to go. It focuses less on your problems and more on your possibilities. It focuses more on your real capabilities and less on your perceived inadequacies. It is a coaching model that works well with individual leaders, work teams, and small groups.

Our potential clients are business executives, educators, board members, government officials, faith-based and non-profit leaders, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and community leaders. I believe 100% that any leader can benefit from coaching engagements that move them toward a better place. My first commitment is to the leaders in my community, Mansfield, where I’ve lived for over 13 years and where I serve on the Mansfield Public Library Advisory Board.

I am most proud of the benefits we can provide through the coaching of emotional intelligence. As a certified provider of the EQ-I 2.0 assessment, I can coach leaders and teams on how to increase usage of their critical EQ skill. By knowing and growing your EQ, you can create productive relationships, improve your self-perception, even enhance how you express yourself and how you cope with stress.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve been a reader from an early age, especially the daily newspaper. Even though technically I am an introvert, growing up I also was always a bit of a ham. I enjoyed being the center of attention and seeing my name in print. At Lake Highlands High School, this led to being the editor of the newspaper, an actor, and a public speaker. While I never played sports, I fell in love with watching sports and writing about sports. More than anything, I guess I loved words. I’ve always been a person of words, writing words, speaking words, and reading words. Maybe that is why coaching appeals to me, because ultimately words define our challenges, our personal map of the world, our thought processes, and our paths to success.
