Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Rain.
Leo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I saw people fulfilling purpose but not finding their passion. I believe God created the plans for our life to be enjoyed. The thing is, no one takes the time and effort to tap in with God to find out those plans. So that put me on a journey to find out where His plans for my life are, aka the place where passion meets purpose.
One day I had talked to a doctor who had been in his practice for over 50 years. I had a conversation with him about how he knew being a physician was him living in his passion and purpose. He said, “Your purpose and passion is in your childhood. Think about what you loved to do when you were a child. When you’re a kid, you’re the most untainted by society and family pressures. You’re the purest version of yourself. On top of that God uses who we are for His plans. He said he always wanted chemistry sets and science toys as a kid. Now he’s one of the longest-standing physicians in Little Rock, AR, and has been practicing medicine for over 50 years. That was my answer. That conversation gave a perspective of life I never considered.
I sat and just thought about who I was as a kid and what I was always doing. When I thought about it, I was always a naturally talented singer/writer and I loved music. So much that I was flown out to Orlando, FL for a national poetry competition. So much that if I had the option to do a song or rap for a class project, I would do it and get the easy A. So much that I spend hours every night replicating covers on YouTube, for fun. I didn’t realize I did it that much until I really looked back at the kid I was growing up.
Today, it’s been almost a year and a half since that conversation and I haven’t looked back. When I work on music, it feels purposeful. It feels natural singing, writing, and creating. Even more, I feel like God gives me affirmation through some of the music opportunities I’ve had in Dallas. The more I work on my talent as an artist, the more it feels right.
Ultimately, I just want to be an artist that inspires others. I want to be an artist that creates a different perspective of life and love. I believe there’s something great inside of me that God wants me to share and develop.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far, it hasn’t been the smoothest. One of the biggest struggles has been staying hungry and continuing to develop as an artist. In every story of greatness, you see the main character having to find the consistency and hunger to stay true to their craft. That’s the struggle I’ve been facing. I have the talent, but I’m making sure I put the mentality behind that talent.
Another struggle has been getting a band back together. Life has been “lifing” and now I have been working to build a dope band. God-willing the band will be ready for performances and gigs by August! So, contact me via email for any business inquiries.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a local R&B artist who sings, songwrites, and performs around the Dallas area.
I’m most proud of the work I’ve put into my craft and development as an artist. From teaching myself music theory to learning sound engineering and mixing, I have learned so much in such little time. On top of that, I have two singles (“Why” and “Love Language”) out on all platforms that I worked hard to create! Best part is all of the love and support gained from those two singles has been just more affirmation to keep going.
What’s sets me apart from other artist is that I am true to myself, and me being true to myself isn’t what the industry portrays. I personally try my best to be a cool-ass individual who loves God and walks in purpose. And, I think God has blessed me with ability to articulate that persona and perspective with a fly, smooth vibe. I feel like that’s what the industry needs. Honestly, I feel like that’s what the world needs.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My best advice for finding a mentor is to pray for one and wait for who He shows you. God is real and he can plug us with whatever we need. He knows our personality to the fullest and who will work for us. He is just waiting for to ask.
That’s LITERALLY what I did and it worked lol. I prayed for my mentors and amazing men and women popped up in my life to become mentors.
