Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara Balderas.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was with a major retailer here in DFW for almost 16 years. I’d worked my way from the stores through the corporate office in different positions, and ended up a content manager for their website as they were rolling into the Ecommerce space. Since I’d worked for them through college – it seemed like my first “real job” – that just lasted a really long time. There was a lot of change going on at the company in my last year – and I knew that it was only a matter of time before changes would be coming my way – so I started dabbling in studying for my Real Estate license. When I was finally laid off, there was this sense of peace (I think I actually laughed a little when I was told). Probably because I had half of a plan and thought that while I didn’t know where I was headed – I knew I’d land on my feet. I was called by a friend in the marketing world to do a bit of consulting right after I was laid off – and I did consult for about 18 months – but I knew I’d be happier owning my own business. So, I finished my classes and got my license in January of 2016. I interviewed quite a few brokerages, and settled on JP & Associates. At the time, they only had a bit over 300 agents, but I knew that this felt right, and was the best place I could be to start over. Now, while I’m not one of their top producers yet, my goal is to become one while ensuring my clients have the best service possible.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No – building a new business is never smooth. There were months in the beginning where I felt that I was paying out more than I’d ever make back. There were days and nights were I spent hours upon hours advertising trying to find my next client – only to have my phone stay silent. There have been months early on when I didn’t get paid because I was chasing the wrong type of client. And, then there is your family and your relationships which, unless you have a strong foundation, will definitely take a beating. I’ve had countless conversations at 1 and 2 am with my husband because that is the first time I’ve been able to talk to him for the day – and I’m very fortunate that he’s understanding because he owns his own business as well and has been in my shoes.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, I’m a REALTOR®, which may sound simple, but in fact – it’s a person who wears quite a few hats. We have to be sales people, investors, advisors, matchmakers, negotiators and sometimes even referees. We have to know the market, watch for signs of change and ensure that our clients receive the best service possible. I specialize in residential real estate in North Tarrant County/Southern Denton County. So, buying and selling homes for owners and investors. What I feel sets me apart from other REALTORS is that I’m looking at your full plan – not just helping you buy or sell a house. I’m thinking about where you’re going, what you’re going to need and what it’s going to take to get you there. My goal is to ensure that my clients are satisfied with their purchase or sale, and that they have the resources available to them when they need them. I’m most proud of the volunteer work and donations that my husband and I have the ability to give with our respective businesses. I’m a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of Oklahoma Plains, and my husband is what I call a “serial donator” – whenever he sees a group donating to the food bank, or any relief efforts – he always donates. Its part of our mantra – we didn’t get here easily, and it’s our job to help others.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was my first ever buy/sale – which was also my first ever transaction. It’s the best feeling in the world to know that you can actually do this job and that you can help someone.
