Community Highlights: Meet Nylah Harris of Boss Gloss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nylah Harris.

Nylah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my business back on June 24, 2020 when the pandemic was in the midst of its upcoming! Now I remember the moment everything came to play very vividly. It was the day that I started the search for my new profound business and the day Boss Gloss was born…

I was sitting on my bed and I remember being on my computer watching YouTube when I came across a DIY video for lip gloss recommended by YouTube. Interested, I decided to watch it and ended up thinking it was sooo cool. Next thing you know, I was watching more and more videos of girls making the gloss at home with basic ingredients. Coming to find out, young girls like me were actually starting businesses from it and this only revved me up as I had been searching for a business idea that same month. Btw This was just after my snack stand idea had gotten shut down by a couple parks and before Covid was really a thing. Basically, I was back at the drawing board that summer trying to figure out how to earn money for myself. This only meant that the lip gloss business was a sign, right?

Well, whether it was or not I was sooo excited thinking about the idea of starting a lip gloss business I decided to stomp in the living room where my mom was. I stood in front of her and told her that I was going to start my own business to which she responded saying “Ok, you do your thing girl!” This only made me feel even more confident allowing me to strut out proud of my first win/accomplishment of my newly found business (and because if my mom asked me what I was doing I could say “you said it was ok…” and get out of trouble… ;).

As soon as I got back to my room, I called my best friend excitedly and asked her whether or not she wanted to start this lip gloss business with me… She ended up saying “yes” but never got back with me so I took matters into my own hands. I began researching, watching videos, and visualizing myself making it and packaging orders. This only led me to calling up family members to help me get the money I needed for it and the rest is history!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth road? Well, I think that I’ve had it better than most. The only big struggle/regret is that I wish I would’ve done a lot more research which would’ve saved quite a bit of money. I was excited though and I wanted to hurry and get started so I ended up rushing through things that could’ve been avoided. Also being a 15yr old girl, in high school, with lots of work would to me be an obstacle that I’ve managed to balance. Having homework and tests to study for, as well as wanting to just chill and relax with friends, whilst managing and orchestrating a business is what I call and what I MUST have, time management.

At my age a lot of the kids at my school are not really focused on the right things and being surrounded by a whole lot of bad influences is why I pride in being a leader myself and giving knowledge when I can to those who will listen. I think it’s important to have a goal and find something that you can focus on because it for one keeps you out of trouble and allows you to work toward something. Boss Gloss was my something and I really appreciate how much I’ve grown and learnt from it.

It also pushes me knowing that I’m being a role model for those at my high school. People will come to me and ask me questions about how I’m doing what I’m doing and the advice I can give to them so they can do the same. It honestly makes me happy knowing that I can give my wisdom/knowledge to those who ask for it and are willing to receive it no matter how much they disagree.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
