Life & Work with Austin Uzor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Uzor.

Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My move to the United States in 2016 was one that was filled with hope and uncertainty. Hope that I may find a better future, and uncertainty on how to go about that pursuit. Leaving Nigeria for the first time in twenty-five years was hard but I had to do it to keep the dream of a better life alive. The transition from Nigeria to the US was tough. It still isn’t complete; I do not think it ever will. You have to understand that I lived my whole life as a Nigerian and having to start all over again is one thing but having to do that as [an] adult is something totally different. As an immigrant, my actions, and the actions of others around me, remind me every day that I am still a foreigner, and that’s okay. Transitioning into a multicultural society like the US can be tough but it is an exciting experience. I learn new things every day and that keeps me going.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. As an immigrant who has only been in America for six years, I had to start all over again. Although I already bagged a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of Nigeria Nsukka back in 2013, I had to go back to school in pursuit of a master’s degree in Painting and Drawing. I graduated with my MFA last year and I have been exploiting all the possible opportunities that comes as a result of getting a higher degree. This has been very challenging but worth it. Trying to make a living in the studio while teaching and traveling at the same time is a lifestyle that consumes anyone putting on similar shoes. You see yourself almost transform into this obsessive animal, and that has the capability of destroying your relationship with family and friends. Also, these responsibilities can be financially draining when they bounce off each other.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I primarily am a studio artist who makes paintings and drawings for a living. Apart from taking drawing and painting commissions occasionally, I participate in gallery shows, sales of artworks, and workshops. I am most proud of how I have been able to sustain my dreams as an artist by waking up every day and creating honest works that are purposeful to me and anyone that comes in contact with them. I think my work ethic and discipline sets me apart from others, also being honest about my craft makes me more in tune with my goals and methodologies.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me is waking up every day and finding purpose. In any shape or form, having a reason to wake up every day and pursue a particular dream is what success is to me. Finding reason to never stop in that pursuit.
