Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Wright.
Tonya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The business started out as a partnership between two nurses that were interested in opening a spa for vaginal steaming. My business partner is a beautiful person, fun, and creative. Unfortunately, the partnership ended after about a year. I decided to keep going. I still do not own a storefront of my own but my products are available for purchase at Ideal for U Consignment Boutique in Cedar Hill, Texas. My business also travels to different venues like pop up shops and colleges throughout the metroplex. Vaginal steaming was the main focus in the beginning but I’ve since then learned to make Natural Vegan products. I also learned to make Body butters, soaps, scrubs, body oils, deodorants, wax melts, candles, yoni oils, body wash, and so much more. Researching different products and crafts inspired me to venture out into learning about other products expanding my brand.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I applied for several monetary grants and have been unfortunate. My business was chosen for a grant to participate in an organization. I was mentored by The Navigation Lighthouse Foundation for a year. The program allowed me to learn how to get in front of businesses like Krogers and Albertsons. I continue to work full time as a Licensed Vocational Nurse to support my business. Natural products such as Organic Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Castor Oil to name a few, are expensive. It takes a minimum of 4 weeks for my natural soaps to cure. If I run out of products that would mean waiting another month for the curing process. Another struggle has been exposure. I find myself on social media several hours out of the day promoting and posting images of my products. It has now been two years and I continue to strive. My dad is an entrepreneur of Derrys’ Popcorn Balls in Louisiana and he has been in business for over for 30 years. I also have five wonderful boys and two grandchildren to keep me motivated.
That’s motivation for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work full time as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. I worked as a Certified Nurses assistant for over 10 years. I’m proud to have become a nurse to have a more in-depth relationship with my patients. I’m proud of my journey in the nursing field.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was shy and I’m still conquering this. I joined different activities to help me interact with others. My mother loved to travel and this allowed me to meet with different people around the United States. I’ve attended schools in Las Vegas, California, Michigan, Texas, and Louisiana. I attend venues with over 5000 attendees.
