Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Sanchez.
Hi Lexi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Art has always been a central part of my life. I started off as an illustrator- in fact, I’ve been drawing since as early as I can remember. I moved into digital art when I was thirteen and have been doing that ever since! But when I was 17 one of my friends from school gave me a film camera. I had always been intrigued by photography and film-making since I was young. I didn’t know much about taking photos, but I enjoyed the act of capturing things on film and feeling the anticipation of how it will come out. As years went by, I started taking it more and more seriously. I started off getting weddings & different event gigs but I realized I wanted to branch out much more. Thus, I’ve tried tapping more into filmmaking and experimenting in studio photography and even street photography. The possibilities of things to create seem so endless, and I don’t know yet which niche I belong to, but for now, I think I’m just here to enjoy the process of trying to figure it out… and honestly, I think I’m okay if I never do. As long as I’m creating, I’m happy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is to not get frustrated with myself and allowing space to mess up. Not every roll or photo set is going to come out perfect, and I’ve had to learn how to give myself grace. Thankfully I have incredible people in my life who love me and champion me forward when I struggle to do so for myself. In addition to that, I have always felt that being a woman in the photo community you have to work harder to prove yourself. We can’t really afford to be mediocre.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance photographer and illustrator based in Dallas, TX. I shoot mainly on digital nowadays, but I still shoot a lot of medium format film for clients. I have shot quite a bit of weddings in the past and I think as of now most people know me for my more experimental approach to wedding photography. Although recently I’ve been shooting much more in studios with models and local brands. I’d say I’m most proud of my ability to stay true to my own style, and not settling with the styles or aesthetics that are popular just to get more work. I want my work to be true to me and I hope that people can recognize that when they see it.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I try to watch a lot of the selections from the Criterion Collection. I have found that they inspire me a lot to create, and give me new perspectives on the world. Seeing other people’s interpretations to this reality is really special and has impacted by art significantly.
