Today we’d like to introduce you to Ubong Edohoukwa.
Hi Ubong, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Ubong Edohoukwa and I am the founder of Homebody Organization Services.
Like many professional organizers, I’ve been doing this all of my life- but for free. As the only daughter in my family, my “duties” were to help my mom around the house, so, naturally, I spent a lot of my time in the kitchen. I wasn’t very into cooking, so while she’d cook, I’d look for *literally* anything else to do. I used to open the fridge and go to town. Expired condiments? Trash. Bad leftovers? Trash. Food that we knew we weren’t going to eat? Trash. And gradually, the lights in the fridge got a little brighter with every item I removed. That was my favorite part. Once everything was out of the fridge and either in the trash or on the counter, I’d wipe down each shelf and begin the process of putting items back in the fridge- systematically of course. Fruits with fruits, veggies with veggies, and cheese and yogurt placed perfectly in the small sliding drawer. I fell in love with the process. Soon, my passion for organization grew and I moved to the pantry, then to my room and into my closet and drawers which have been nice, neat, and color-coordinated ever since I could remember.
In 2020, I was encouraged by my life coach to take my gift and share it with other people. Of course, I watched all of the home improvement/organization series on Netflix and saw them organizing spaces for a living, but I didn’t think that being a professional organizer was a thing that I could actually do. After all, I was going to school to be a physical therapist.
Well, today, I’m doing it! I am both a physical therapist and a professional organizer. After taking my first client in 2021, my business, which at the time didn’t even have a name, began picking up speed and before I knew it, I was booked and busy. I knew that if I was going to take this business further, I at least needed a business name. I’ve always been a homebody, and in being one, I spent most of my time organizing different areas of the house. And thus, the birth of Homebody Organization Services- where everything has a home.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely some struggles along the way. The biggest ones were self-doubt and overthinking- especially on my first project. Prior to that experience, I had only been organizing and reorganizing areas around my parents’ house to my liking. And now I was going to do it for someone else? “What if their vision is different than mine?” “What if this project is too big for me?” “What if I can’t finish?” “What if I’m not good enough?” But soon I realized that all of those self-limiting beliefs were exactly that- self-limiting. And if I dwelled on them long enough, I would not have had the courage to take the first step, put myself out there and try my very best.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Homebody Organization Services?
Homebody Organization Services specializes in all things home organization. From closets and pantries to bathrooms and home offices- you name it. We help our clients feel at home in their home. We pride ourselves in our ability to create systems that actually work. While it’s an aesthetically pleasing experience to walk into a ROYGBIV-inspired closet, organization is so much more than that. At Homebody, we make sure that our clients’ spaces are not only beautiful but also functional. We tailor our approach to fit the needs of the individual in order to empower them to maintain the organization long after we leave. Everything has a home, and we’re here to help you find it.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was a near-death experience with my cousin and my brother lol. We were still in elementary school at this point. The three of us went to our neighborhood pool chaperoned by our older cousin. I remember my brother was sitting on the edge of the pool, my older cousin was lounging in a chair and my other cousin and I were in the deep end on a pool floaty. So, my cousin says “on the count of three we’re going to jump off of the pool floaty” and of course, I’m already freaking out. He starts counting, “1…2…“ And before he had the chance to say three, I jumped off of the floaty and onto his back – I’m already laughing as I’m telling you this – and we literally both start drowning. In the middle of this chaos, I see my brother safe and sound sitting at the edge of the pool cracking up. I believe at one point my cousin pulls me down to able to come up for air and then we switched again. It was a mess lol. But after what felt like an eternity, my older cousin finally jumped in to save us. We went home immediately after lol.
