Conversations with Justin Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Franklin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story is a tale of determination and a passion for music. It started in 2010 when I was first introduced to electronic dance music. I was absolutely blown away with what I heard and I was immediately hooked. About a year later, I was introduced to DJing. I was so fascinated by what I could do by pressing a few buttons and turning some knobs. Fast forward to 2014, and I watched the Ultra Music Festival live stream for the first time. This livestream, from a hindsight perspective, was one of the single most important moment of my life. That livestream made me realize that DJing and producing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. So, every day after that livestream, I committed to making that dream a reality. Now, almost a decade removed from 2014, I’ve played countless shows in front of thousands of people, and this is just the beginning of my career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I had to learn a lot of things on my own. I had to teach myself how to DJ, as well as produce high-quality original music. I’ve faced plenty of obstacles getting to where I am now, including people skipping over me on opportunities, politics within the music industry, playing empty shows, you name it. I’m thankful for the roadblocks. It shows just how much I’m willing to deal with to succeed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a DJ and a producer. I mainly make Electronic Dance Music, but more specifically Bass music. Bass music can range from Drum and Bass, to heavier sub genres such as Tearout, Dubstep, and Riddim. I’m mainly known for playing and producing melodic dubstep and high-energy sets. I’m definitely most proud of being able to look back at myself from 2010/2011 and being able to say “I’m doing exactly what I said I was going to do”. I think what sets me apart is the fact that nowadays, a lot of artists like to make the their music, their brand, their image (etc.) in a dark, mysterious, almost negative type energy. With me, I’m a very positive person, so I want my audience to see my brand in a bright, positive, and colorful manner, while still being able to play heavy bass tracks.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think it’s played a pretty solid role in my career so far. There are opportunities that I’ve gotten that some people who are more qualified than I am haven’t gotten yet. On top of that, that goes in multiple aspects as far as performance opportunities, collaborations, etc.
