Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Janoska.
Hi Justin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A meaningful life to me is directly connected to the quality of creative pursuits. I have been an artist my whole life and had envisioned I would be in the film industry after undergraduate school studying visual arts.
You can only be a “starving artist” for so long and so after 5 years of trying to make a career out of it, I went into personal training. A friend actually recommended I become certified because it was a good way to make money, so I gave it a go.
Through the experience of helping women lose weight, I realized how important nutrition was and chose to become a certified sports nutritionist.
One thing lead to another and I discovered orthomolecular nutrition – the medicine of optimizing one’s body with high amounts of nutrients to restore function. Complementary and alternative medicine was appealing to me, and I thought about how fulfilling it would be to support people with cancer in this way.
Fast forward a few years later and I have now graduated summa cumme laude from The University of Bridgeport with my Master’s in Human Nutrition.
Not too long into grad school though, my mother was just diagnosed with Hashimoto’s – an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid.
My mother has been suffering with chronic migraines since I was a child and had a whole host of unexplainable symptoms that she had to try to figure out for years. No doctor had an answer. In retrospect, I now know she was dealing with the emergence of an autoimmune disease.
I made it my mission to get answers for this disease and see what alternative medicine had to offer. I was blown away with how much evidence there was about what caused it and what could be done to treat it – things that conventional medicine had no solution to other than thyroid replacement medication.
My mom made substantial progress and got her disease under control because of what I introduced to her. It was no walk in the park since she had much to overcome, but now she has the skills to control her immune system.
After all, this is a lifelong disease she has to managed and no cure for autoimmunity exists.
This entire experience with my mother prompted me to start my company, The Autoimmune Revolution. My life’s meaning is now creating the opportunity for women to have control of their life, discover a sense of wholeness and remember what it feels to be alive.
After nearly 5 years now of doing this work with clients, I have had seen a lot of the same patterns and heard the same stories.
Childhood trauma or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) was one of the recurring themes in my work. I couldn’t believe how pervasive it was in autoimmunity. My mother had a great deal of trauma and stress that no doctor – even integrative medicine professionals – spoke to her about.
I had an epiphany one day and said that this is where is really begins. Granted, autoimmunity is complex and not caused by one thing. However, I was convinced that these early life stressors was what started to fill up the “burden bucket.”
Trauma healing has become such an integral part of my work now with clients who not only struggle with Hashimoto’s and autoimmunity but IBS, fibromyalgia. PCOS, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and infertility. Unhealed trauma and unrelenting stress is woven into all of these conditions for many folks.
I’ve spent the last 3 years studying privately studying with experts in mind-body medicine and therapists who help me acquire skills to support others with trauma.
The trauma field is only about 30 years old. It’s still quite new and there is no shortage of people out there walking around with pockets of pain. I’m so invested in bringing awareness to trauma and offering evidence-based techniques that conventional psychotherapy doesn’t offer.
I’m at a place now where I want to go further and will be pursuing my doctorate in health sciences with a specialization in a trauma in the Fall of 2022.
It’s incredible to see how many turns I’ve taken over the past decade of my life, but it all happens for a reason. If it weren’t for my mom, I wouldn’t be here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all.
I mentioned most of this previously but being a starving artist in NJ/NY was tough. I didn’t know if I could survive in this field. That scarcity mindset lead me to pursue fitness.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Autoimmune Revolution?
I am on a mission to help revolutionize the way we recover from autoimmune disease after watching my mother suffer from incapacitating symptoms of Hashimoto’s for over two decades.
Hence, the birth of my company, The Autoimmune Revolution. My team and I guide women to regain control of their body, discover a sense of wholeness and remember what it feels to be alive.
What I have found is that once pockets of pain and untouched traumatic wounds have been reconciled, even the most seemingly insurmountable autoimmune diseases are able to be tamed. Transformation and transcendence is within anyone’s grasp if we are only willing to face painful truth and step outside of the conventional medical model.
As a wounded healer myself, I support clients to acquire a deeper understanding of their life story, how they got here, and guide them to come home to their authentic self.
My team of trauma-informed autoimmune experts and I have transformed hundreds of humans who possess Hashimoto’s, Psoriasis, Lupus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, PCOS, Infertility, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, and Trauma.
What matters most to you? Why?
Leaving my mark on this Earth by being of service to others and change lives. The most fulfilling feeling is giving someone hope and the sensation of aliveness after being told by doctors “there’s nothing we can do,” “your labs are normal,” “just try harder” or “we can’t figure out what’s wrong with you.” Showing people what’s possible and guiding them to the truth is my mission.
