Daily Inspiration: Meet Joe Lego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Lego.

Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Joe Lego MS, CSCS, PES, NSCA-CPT, NPTI. I have been interested in fitness from an early age, I was born with cerebral palsy, but I never let that stop me eventually going on to play basketball in college. I, however, did encounter some injuries, and much of the team staff had little to no knowledge of how to help me in both high school and college. I began to learn on my own making it my mission to make sure no athletes career would be cut short due to off-the-field circumstances. I began studying Exercise Science, I received a master’s degree at LIU in Brooklyn where I served as a graduate assistant strength coach for baseball and softball. Upon graduating I became a strength coach in the minor leagues with the NY Mets for the duration of 3 years. After I got out, I went back to college coaching and teaching as an adjunct professor, I bounced around a little bit until starting my own private training several years ago In NYC called Controlled Madness Human Performance LLC dedicated to improving the lives of everyone from high-level athletes to your average person. However, due to covid, I was forced to move to online for about 2 years before deciding to move to Fort Worth Alliance area in early January. I also starting a podcast that has been growing over the last 2 years and is something I am deeply passionate about. Overview -The Strength Coach Experience is a podcast where we share valuable insight into the journey of individuals whose lives have been shaped by the field of Strength & Conditioning and Exercise Science. Join us as our guests share their stories firsthand and how they have applied their learnings to other areas in their lives, such as business, medicine, and entrepreneurship.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road I was born 3 months early with cerebral Palsy which is neuromuscular condition marked by impaired muscle coordination and other disabilities typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth. I specifically have hemiplegia which affects predominantly one side of the body mine specifically being the entire left side early on I had legal blindness and difficulty with movements of both the arms and legs. However due to the proactivity of my parents going to developmental schools and physical therapy at a very early age I was able to overcome a lot of the early issues with only minimal effects into my teenage years and currently as an adult. I look at the experience as something that has shaped my life. Early on when I first got into fitness I couldn’t just go out and do every exercise “normally” so as a result, I had to take a deeper dive than most into the movements and come up with a system that worked for me and was effective. As a result, when I started studying exercise science, I already had a very advanced understanding of the body and how it worked from a biomechanical standpoint and I just kept adding knowledge and through it found my purpose. I attribute where I am today to not only my parents, and everything they did for me constantly pushing me to be better. Also, to the condition itself because without going through everything I did I don’t feel like I would be the person I have become. Not only having a high-level understanding of the body, but not walking until a later age help me to develop and articulate language at an early age and has been a staple in my ability to communicate as a coach, a teacher, but also to the passion project with my podcast. So, it has not been an easy road but without the experience, the journey wouldn’t have been worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a strength and conditioning coach and a speaker/Podcast Host. I specialize in building athletes and help them grow and reach their highest potential through different systems of biomechanics and also from physiological standpoint. involving them into decision and really figuring out the why they are pursuing the path they are currently on. I also do the same with the general population helping them to achieve their goals by creating programs that fit their schedules but also yield the results they are looking for and educating them along the way. the goal is not to teach them how to exercise but to make a lasting impact on their lives. I would say I am known for my knowledge, energy, and the passion for life that comes out of me when I coach and train. what am most proud is the relationships I have made over the years it has always been about my clients and athletes and never about me. I don’t think there is anything better in the world than when someone you have trained or taught tells you that the time spent with you has helped shape their life in a positive way. what sets me apart is just being genuine who I am all the time and never changing you know what you’re going to get when you train with me and speak with me, it will always stay the same. It has always been changing lives and never about ego.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Energy, passion, and my communication skills I feel like with those three things you can accomplish anything as long as people know your passionate about something through your actions and communication it will be contagious. I am also very driven to achieve my goals and will never let anything stop me from reaching them.
