Today we’d like to introduce you to Alycer Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It started when I was very young. I attended the elementary school where my mom taught. On our way to and from school, we would pass by this particular house that was for sale. I loved it and wanted my mom to buy it. She would always say that it was too expensive. I called the listing agent from the number on the sign and set an appointment for us to view the house. I guess the agent didn’t realize or didn’t care that I was underage. We did view the house, but needless to say, my mom didn’t purchase it. That’s when I was initially bitten by the real estate bug.
As an adult, I was a single mother raising three daughters. We lived in a one-bedroom apartment, in one of the less desirable areas of Dallas, long enough for me to save money for a down payment. I had a rude awakening when no agents wanted to assist me because I only qualified for a $75,000 loan. Every Saturday my daughters and I would pack drinks and snacks, print the HUD list of foreclosures, and ride all day to look at houses on our own.
Eventually, an agent that was a friend to my then co-worker called me about a bank foreclosure she wanted me to view. She gave me the combination to access the property and the rest was history. My daughters and I fell in love with the house and I purchased it. Needless to say, the agent never saw the house and I have never met her in person. She did manage to pick up her commission check though.
That experience was confirmation that being a real estate agent was my calling. A few years later, I enrolled in classes and passed the exam! I have made a vow NOT to be an absentee agent or shun clients that don’t have as much purchasing power as some that are more financially wealthy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been everything but smooth. Anything worth having will come with challenges and since I knew that being an agent was my calling, I could not give up.
When I initially obtained my license, it was a year before I had my first closing. Thankfully I was working full time because the dues were expensive. It didn’t get any easier because it was almost another year before I had additional closings. BUT GOD! Once He opened the windows of Heaven, the closings flowed and I was closing at least 3 or more transactions per month.
That went on for approximately 2 years. then, the real estate market came tumbling down. I had enough reserves for about a year, but I was able to go back to my previous employer.
I still maintained my license and in 2019, I stepped out on faith and said goodbye to Corporate America for the final time. I have since opened my brokerage and working to open brokerages in other states.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The DFW Real Estate Place aka TheDFWREP?
I am so blessed and extremely happy that I get to wake up daily and do what I love. When you are walking in your calling and doing what you love, it does not feel like work. My business is a real estate brokerage that specializes in investment properties, foreclosures, and assisting investors, but can assist with any real estate need.
My ability to see past the ugly and visualize the profit potential makes advising investors on purchasing investment properties and foreclosures a strong suit. Whether it’s a flip or rental property, the numbers have to make sense.
Clients are the main focus, but I am also results-driven. Negotiating and getting the best possible deal for my clients is crucial. Referrals are very important in this industry.
Now that the brokerage is up and running, I am beginning to recruit agents that will be a good fit for the business.
Giving back and being involved in the community are very important. I volunteer at non-profits regularly and I am on the police advisory board in my city. When closing a transaction, I donate 1% of my commission to a non-profit. Giving back is not an option, but a lifestyle.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My late mother was my biggest supporter and loudest cheerleader. She was so instrumental in molding and guiding me to be the woman that I am today. My father was a business owner and gave me a lot of business advice over the years. Watching him run a successful business was so inspiring. My beautiful daughters are very instrumental when it comes to my branding and social media. They guide me and instruct me regularly. I will admit, sometimes I don’t listen.
I have a mentor from my last corporate job who is an important voice of reasoning in my life. She’s in New York, but I know that she’s just a text or phone call away. My prior manager and many of my ex-coworkers continue to not only motivate me, but some are also clients. I have three men in my inner circle that push me to be the best I can be. For privacy reasons, they shall remain nameless, but they know who they are. For all of the other people in my inner circle that pour into me continuously, I am eternally grateful.
