Today we’d like to introduce you to Aubrey Thompson. Them and their team share their story with us below:
The original Poverty Knob was started in the 1950’s by our grandfather, Jack Pate. Jack was a cattleman, Veteran of the Korean War, and dedicated Texas A&M University graduate.
Today, Jack’s son-in-law, Ronnie; grandson, Ramsey; and great-granddaughter, Aubrey, have revamped the Poverty Knob name and are continuing Jack’s legacy.
Ronnie is over market outreach and agricultural management. He helps with product design, as well as with wood working and beekeeping.
Ramsey is an accomplished wood worker and hand-creates every wooden board, with design and stylistic help from Aubrey. It was his idea to create Poverty Knob Ranch and Company to honor Jack. He also helps with beekeeping.
Aubrey followed in Jack’s footsteps and is a graduate of Texas A&M University. She designs and makes the soaps and candles. Aubrey also helps with the beekeeping.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a new business always has its struggles. One of the toughest we’ve faced is finding our market. One place may be good to sell cutting boards, but not for our honey. Each market is different, so that keeps us on our toes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are most known for our custom cutting boards. We always tell our customers that we can make their dreams come true, as long as they involve wood.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The value of having a job where we get to work outside. Working with our bees became our way to pass the time.
