Rising Stars: Meet Chelsie Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsie Washington.

Hi Chelsie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Weird Mom was born out of the pandemic back in March 2020. I was up late at night just thinking of how I could use my new abundance of time for my benefit when I got the idea to finally start a podcast. I had been interested in starting a podcast at least 2 years prior but I never took the leap until that day. I wanted to make a podcast about something that I’d always be interested in talking about. Being a mom to a three-year-old at the time, I knew motherhood would be perfect because I had all kinds of thoughts swirling in my head about raising humans in this world. The next day, I signed up for a free account on Anchor.fm, recorded an episode using my phone, and released it. It was scary and definitely left me feeling vulnerable. Plus, I thought podcasting would be easy but it is, in fact, quite a lot of work. Nevertheless, I kept at it. Eventually, I started inviting other parents on the show as guests to talk about their experiences with parenting. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the beginning, it was smooth because I had a lot of time on my hands. Soon as my son entered pre-k and the world began to slowly open back up, it became increasingly more challenging to keep up with scheduling guests, planning topics, finding time to edit, etc. In fact, I’m currently in a rough patch as my show is on hiatus right now while I figure out what direction I want to move it in. I am still keeping up with my community via Instagram and TikTok by pushing out content on parenthood there. But as far as the actual show, I’m in a transitional period right now.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to say that Weird Mom is a community for parents to be able to think freely about parenting and being themselves. I know that there are plenty of mom podcasters, influencers, and bloggers out there. Because that field is so saturated, there are times where I feel like “Why would anyone listen to me?” But then I think that everyone has the opportunity to take something and make it their own and I think I do that well with Weird Mom. I strive to touch on subjects that aren’t’ generally covered in other spaces. The thoughts may be specific but I like to think there’s at least one person who may feel the same on any given subject.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I used to think success was dependent on other people. Like if someone complimented what I was doing or approved of it. But over time I’ve come to define success as giving your future self-something to be proud of.
