Hidden Gems: Meet Madison Newman of Madison Newman Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Newman.

Hi Madison, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I love design, and I always have. I graduated from UNT with a BFA in Dance. After that, I worked for a boutique consulting firm where I traveled around North America helping CEOs and Executives gain clarity on how to better run their businesses. I assisted during sessions, managed all of our consulting material, created custom tools for clients, and created graphics for the firm. After my time there I worked at a real estate brokerage managing their marketing and graphics. I started my own design business in 2020 after my son was born because I am passionate about providing small businesses with branding and graphics that showcase who they are as a company and will serve them for years to come.

Design and creativity have always been a part of my life, but I didn’t start learning graphic design until my mid-20s. As an adult, I’ve had a hard time “choosing a career” because I had so many things that I enjoyed doing but never knew how to pursue them as an actual job. Graphic Design changed that. I’ve always seen my love of design and creating things as more of a hobby. Now, I get to do this for a living, and it’s incredible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge has turned out to be myself. I’ve had incredible mentors in my life who have helped me see that I am often the one holding myself back. Perspective is so important, especially when you are a one-woman show. It’s easy to doubt yourself and your worth as an artist and business owner. Once I started reframing those doubts as opportunities for growth, my perspective shifted and so did my confidence. I can’t recommend a business coach or a life coach enough. It is a complete game changer!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I help small businesses succeed through strategic graphic design. Beautiful graphics are only one piece of the puzzle. As a business owner, you have to ensure your branding and messaging is reaching your target audience. We are inundated with information all day long. Your potential clients or customers want to know why they should choose your business over others, but they will only give you seconds to show that. I help my clients create branding and graphics that communicate effectively and succinctly with their target audience. Brand strategy paired with incredible graphics provides my clients with products that will serve them for years.

I currently offer branding, event branding, as well as digital, print, and packaging design.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
With the increase in new businesses, social media, and the gig economy, I think it is vital to have branding that sets you apart. I think that there will be a continued value placed on branding because you aren’t just competing with your town but the world.

Graphic design trends change often but I think the love of vintage and retro style is here to stay! However, I may be biased because it is a style that I love.
