Meet Jasmine Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Robinson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up watching my aunt and my granny do hair. Made me want to do the same. Watching every step from my aunt rolling hair and my granny using the hot comb on the stove. I knew then being a hairstylist was something that I wanted to do. I would do some of my friends’ hair and braid some of the guy’s hair that I went to high school with. After graduating from Clinton High School, I enrolled in Magnolia College of Cosmetology. I taught Pre-k school during the day. I also wanted to be a teacher at that time. I had finished school went to state board and passed the exams. I was now an official licensed cosmetologist. After completing school and getting my license I still worked a full-time job teaching Pre k students. I became a member of the state board of cosmetology in MS. I was an Examiner and later became the Proctor. I decided to move to Texas in 2013. I stayed a few months and later returned to MS. In 2014, I had my amazing son Ja’Rylan. My grandma and mom were a major help with him and still are. In 2019 I moved back to Texas and started working at a Call center but wanted to do hair full time. I had some friends who introduced me to their friends whose hair I would do either at their house or my house. I had a friend that knew someone that had a salon and had open chairs. I stopped by her salon. We talked and discussed how everything was going to go and I signed a contract with her. I moved into the salon the next day. I was still working at the call center and after my shift was over, I would go to the salon and work. The salon was in an amazing location. People would stop by because they didn’t know it was black owned. Some of the owner’s clients would ask me to do their daughter’s hair. Which helped my clientele even more.

I had been praying and talking to my family and close friends about me quitting my job at the call center. They gave me positive feedback. So, I quit the call the center. I decided to do what I called stepping out on faith. I had a great support system that was behind me a 100%. I was very satisfied with the decision I had made. It had been a whole year and now I was a full-time stylist in Texas. I was so thankful. A stylist called me to tell me that she was relocating to another state and was looking for a great stylist to send her clientele to. She told me that she found me on Style Seat and that my work looked amazing. The hairstyles looked very natural and the pictures were clear. I was so shocked when I got the call because I thought “this must be a joke”. Because there are thousands of stylists on Style Seat that she could have picked but she picked me. I was so excited about it. She sent me about 10 clients and they are all still with me till this day!

Later on, the owner and I moved into something smaller. Which was a good thing because all of a sudden Covid -19 hit. It was such a major impact on us because things started shutting down. We couldn’t do anything but stay inside. Before things got too bad, I was able to get certified to do lashes which is another great service that I have added on. Why not have a one-stop shop with lashes and hair? Covid-19 had changed the world! Businesses were slowly opening up. There was a limit on guests and we had to wear THE MASKS! Finally, the salons was able to open slowly with rules. The 6 feet rule. Because of that rule the owner and I could not work at the same time. So, I decided to get my own salon suite. After 6 years in Texas, it was time to have something of my own. I always wanted to have a salon and I knew I wanted a name with its own style. Something different which is how JBarbie Glam n Blinks started after 12 years of being a professional stylist. My family, friends, and clients have been very supportive. Business is picking back up. I can feel that this year will be an amazing year with years to come. I’m getting ready for what I’ve been asking for and that’s to be booked and busy!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been as smooth. But I keep going and pushing myself. Being a native from MS and moving to a new state is like starting from scratch trying to find clientele.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in healthy relaxed/natural hair, knotless braids, kids’ styles, and more. I know how to pretty much do everything from natural hair to relaxed hair, braids, crotchets and sew-ins. I love to style natural hair and just keep it simple. But with moving to Texas, I had to get on the new trends and step it up a little. Which was definitely not a problem because when it comes to hair I love to learn. I do a few little girls’ hair and to see their face light up and look in the mirror with their big smile on their faces is priceless. What sets me apart from others is that I have my own style my own technique that has made me different.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that there is so much to do whether it’s with family, friends, or even if you just would like to have some alone time. What I least dislike about our city and I’m sure everyone dislikes it. is the traffic. No matter how early you leave your house you can still be late.
