Rising Stars: Meet Joana Zapata

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joana Zapata.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m from the small town of Laredo, Texas. Ever since I can remember I loved doing my mother’s hair and makeup, but life sort of pushed me in another direction till I was 28 years old. At that time my dream was to work for Chanel and when it finally happened, I was excited to learn more about the makeup industry. After about year of work for Chanel, I got offered a position at MAC Cosmetics and my career just took off. I was with MAC for 6 year and the last year I finally got to manage my own counter. Now I work as a freelance artist doing not only makeup but my other passion hair. I do this on my free time. Now I work with one of the best Dermatologist in Dallas as her social media and Marketing/Makeup Artist.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There were definitely some challenges along the way. I had to be a self-taught artist due to financial reasons. I definitely had some financial struggles which made it difficult to grow my Make up kit. Having to work weekends as a makeup artist had me spend less time with my children much less be able to freelance. Once Covid hit it made it so difficult for me to have clients because of self-distancing and all event shutdowns. No, that Covid is controlled my career was able to pick up back where I left off.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love creating my own looks which includes hair and makeup. I educated each and every one of my clients the importance of applying sunscreen before makeup applications. The most important trait that I have is that criticism good or bad is not a problem for me. Every client that I service know that if they don’t like something they see I will fix or change without any problem.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
The summer of 2004 my dad, sister, and I came to Dallas for the first time. As soon as my dad drove in on i35 and I could see the bright lights of the city, I fell in love. Laredo is where I was born and raised but Dallas is where I call home.
