Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirk Harper.
Hi Kirk, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started out playing music when I was around 4 years old, with a drum and a pair of brushes and a love of music. In my teenage years, I was a Drummer in local bands but headed south to Houston to make a real attempt at a career. I landed an audition for Rhett Forrester of Riot and toured with him for 2 years. At 23 I moved to Phoenix Arizona and after a couple years of local success, I transitioned into a singer-songwriter with Platypus who signed a recording contract with Vain Records. The success of Platypus landed me the lead singing duties for Oil, a band that featured Guitarists Anthony Mclain of Phunk Junkeez and Mark Simpson of Flotsam and Jetsam as well as Clancy Mc Carthy drummer for Lynch Mob.
After multiple local music awards and countless shows, I was asked to Co-write and record “Smoke This” with George Lynch for Pony Canyon Records with Koch International out of New York. The album, touring, and achievements were amazing.
I moved back home to East Texas in 2004 with an eye on slowing down, that didn’t work out! I immediately started writing songs and set out to make myself a real artist.
I am currently booking and playing as well writing and recording new music!
I’m doing my solo stuff as Kirk Harper and I also am a part of Ford Harper Steele with the Lovely and Talented Jenn Ford and the Amazing Jared Steele with whom I am also doing a lot of live shows. The fire for being creative and never giving up can only be extinguished by leaving this place. I’m pretty sure I’ll have to cancel a gig to attend my funeral! Always do what you love with the people you love and who love you.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The music industry knows no smooth pathways. Every road is a winding path. My struggles were the usual suspects drinking too much and having more fun than is allowed, but the real struggle happens when you try to live a “normal life” at a slow pace but if you stay focused, you’ll learn real and meaningful patience and then you can make all situations positive.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write songs from a Texan perspective with a down-to-earth feel. I perform and I entertain people by doing what I Love.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family by their love and support for me as a person in all of my endeavors
