Today we’d like to introduce you to Leandro Comrie.
Hi Leandro, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As children, we all doodle, draw and paint at some point during our childhood. We have an innate urge to create a mark, to leave a permanent mark somewhere. I was one of those kids who drew until dawn and drawing was my refuge. At an early age, I knew with certainty that my mission in this life was to create art. That is where my story begins.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As with any road, we embark on in life I have had my ups and downs. Art, however, has always saved me. I have had a fervent conviction that what I do matters and has a powerful voice that needs to be heard. Having purpose has protected me from the many perils of self-doubt, comparing myself to others, or envying other people’s success. The artworld is filled with stories, and as an artist, I think it is crucial to keep focus and purposeful in order to tackle any obstacle we may encounter along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have always been interested in people and their stories. As a kid, I would sit in my aunt’s and godmother’s kitchen, respectively, and listen to their stories. The stories were about them and other people, but far from being gossip-oriented; they focused on life experiences and lessons on approaching life from a kinder, more human perspective. Those conversations left a seed in me, and I watched it grow through the years and realized how easy it was for me to connect to people emotionally. I had learned to welcome people and their stories. I considered studying psychology at some point, convinced it was the best way to put this trait to good use, but I turned to paint instead.
Through painting, I can connect not only with other people’s stories but also with my own. No painting reveals a specific story; instead, they are the sum of many stories. My subject matter tends to be inclusive for this reason. I don’t wish to paint solely about one story or focus on one sentiment. The human experience is a combination of emotions that arise and subside. Therefore, my work can be a mix of heartbreak, love, death, friendship, lust, kindness, sexuality, spirituality, and things that we can relate to as human beings.
As an artist, I am intrigued by how we negotiate these aspects of our lives in different times and spaces.
