Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ D Baby.
Hi DJ, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a deep love for music, it’s something like therapy for me. During high school I found myself paying close attention to the art of Dj’n, that’s when I knew I aspired to be one. As a graduation gift, my parents gifted me Dj equipment and the saga began. The next semester I enrolled as a student at Texas Southern University. It didn’t take long for me to become a pretty known DJ on the campus. From private to official university events, I was soaring but I wanted more! The buzz made me hungrier so I started reaching out to club promoters. I taught myself how to humbly seek opportunities while also selling my uniqueness and what I could personally add to their events. To stay relevant, I still market myself with that same energy today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t have many complaints but it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Not too long ago I found myself a bit discouraged because I felt as though society had put me in somewhat of a box. I consider myself a free spirit on a certain level so I’ve always been open to all types of events. I’ve Dj’d just about every kind of event you can think of. I became a consistent Dj for an LGBTQ promoter which eventually led to more LGBTQ promoters booking me. The more I was booked in the LGBTQ community, the less I seemed to get booked elsewhere. I love Dj’n for the LGBTQ community but I never wanted to be boxed into any one sector. I set the goal to begin networking and going out more on my off days in an effort to become more visible to other markets & it worked! I learned that there was still so much opportunity out there but people assumed that I chose to box myself into one community, people literally told me this. My weekly Dj’n schedule greatly varies now, which is how I prefer it to be.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dj’n is only one of my businesses. My most recent addition to my entrepreneurial resume is my company, Hookah Heroes. Hookah Heroes specializes in premium quality hookah products and services. Although we have a standard location inside of Culture Htx, we are mobile and open to vendor opportunities as well. You can follow both of my company’s Instagram pages @DjDBaby & @TheHookahHeroes
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As far as Dj’n, my goal is to continue to elevate. My ultimate objective is to become the official Dj for an accomplished national recording artist. As it pertains to Hookah Heroes, my overall goal is expansion. I’m certain my vision of what “expansion” looks like for me will grow & mature as I do.
