Meet Julie Markley of Gypsy Scoops

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Markley.

Julie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Maybe my story is a lot like other entrepreneurs in the sense that I always had the desire to be my own boss. I am an Army Brat, moved around my whole life. Held several jobs after college I wasn’t happy with. Straw that broke my back was working for child protective services. So unhappy that I just HAD to do something about it (if you’re gonna walk on water, you have to get out of the boat).

I’m probably a lot older than some entrepreneurs but I just didn’t want time to slip away any longer. Why be unhappy? Since I have a background in customer service & restaurants, and at the time 5 years ago, there weren’t any mobile ice cream options, I decided to give ice cream catering a try. Now we have three trucks, a parlor, indoor pushcarts and we are working on expanding to another location. Now I’m happy every single day I go into work. It’s fun, excited & challenging all at the same time!!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have experienced everything from blown tires, 2 blown engines (we call our truck Smokey for a reason), over 90 gallons of melted ice cream, stolen money, trailer jacks falling off the truck, shattered windshields and crazy as heck employees but it all keeps me on my toes.

For the most part, other than the occasional mishap, things have gone smoothly. I always chalk things up to a learning experience. We learn something new every year and we try to adjust to make things better for our customers.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gypsy Scoops – what should we know?
Gypsy Scoops is the “traveling ice cream experience ” we make unique, homemade flavors and bring them to our guests. There aren’t many companies around DFW that do what we do. We pride ourselves on catering a quality product timely and efficiently. We bring 12 hand-scooped flavors, catered from our bright yellow, whimsical trucks.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I tell my employees to “have fun” all the time. If you are happy with your job and they are having fun, the customers will see that and they’ll have fun too.
