Rising Stars: Meet Jonathan Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Jackson. Them and their team share their story with us below:

In 2011, two brothers decided to make getting dirty profitable. Established by cowboys Jonathan and Jason Jackson, Berkshire Farms specializes in free-range, local pork. From thick sliced and flavorful bacon to breakfast and summer sausage, the farm-fresh meats have become a butcher shop essential across the metroplex. With the success of Berkshire Farms and a growing desire amongst the two brothers to pair their meats with spirits, they began to delve into another industry, wine. And in 2017, Berkshire Farms Winery was born.

Like the meats that they so intricately harvest, the craftsmanship in each bottle of wine is just as detailed. The brothers draw on flavors of familiarity to produce each expression, such as savory, spicy peppers, and juicy pomegranate. Each flavor profile is distinct. According to Jonathan, “Its Cheers in a wine bottle, we know your name and create what you like.” There’s trial and error, but it’s through the process they discover a little more about not only the process but the complexities of the relationship from grape to glass.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning curve was steep in a lot of areas. Being familiar with making wines does not make you an expert in growing grapes and vice versa. Growing in North Texas can be very difficult with soil quality and temperamental weather. After that curve, marketing your product, making your product recognizable, creating a product that stands out in imagery and name, but quality as well. Then patience, it is not a one-year commitment, it’s a generational commitment. Grapes do not grow overnight at will be years before you can harvest. In the meantime, focus on the craft. Create a consistent quality product.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Rancher, farmer, and marketing. I am most proud of how I have been able to bridge the gap for a lot of people that are interested in wine but had no one take the time to talk to them about what they like and provide suggestions to point them in the direction of a good wine experience.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Like any artist, appreciation from a satisfied customer. Someone being introduced to a whole new world
