Conversations with Tayla Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayla Hill.

Hi Tayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Art has always been an underlying passion of mine. As a young girl in school, I remember I would always doodle in class when I was supposed to paying attention. Just like any other child, it started out as small little stick figure drawings, to family portraits then eventually detailed sketches of clothes and depictions of people.

It wasn’t until I was in the 6th grade when I became aware of my talent, thanks to close friends and family. It was then when art really piqued my interest. In high school, I would take extra art classes and advanced art to perfect my craft which is where my appreciation and passion expanded; it became my peace.

Eventually, I enrolled into the Art Institute of Dallas where I majored in Fashion Design. Here I was able to combine my love for fashion and art. I was stretched and challenged but soon I realized I was far more capable than the credit I was giving myself. Three and a half years later, I graduated from the Art Institute with my Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in Fashion Design.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After graduating from college, my transition was a bit bumpy. I wasn’t confident if the fashion industry was for me or even if I should pursue anything in the arts. But those thoughts all stemmed from fear, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, and even fear of succeeding. I had to sit with myself and release that emotion because fear does not live here. I was built for this.

When it comes to passion it’s never easy, you just learn to navigate through it. You’re not necessarily guaranteed anything in the world of entrepreneurship so when opposition shows itself you take it for what it is and keep going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I’ve been working on showcasing my art. I am the creator of Zhané’s Gallery, a gallery where simple silhouettes come to life with style and vitality. Zhané’s Gallery came about in 2020, I wanted to cultivate a space where I am able to display my work as if it were in a gallery and also be purchasable, digitally.

What do you think about luck?
I personally don’t believe in luck. I believe God gets all of the credit from this. My foundation is rooted in faith so when trying times present themselves, I go back to my foundation.
