Today we’d like to introduce you to DeErica Williams.
Hi DeErica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started with my love of makeup. I positively love make-up and the joy that it brings to people, especially lipstick and lip-gloss. I’ve always been interested in Beauty Products just as most young girls growing up. I remember being around 5 or 6 years old and going to the Beauty Supply store with my mom. She would allow us to get a few things we wanted. My sister would get a few different things but me… I always picked up lip-gloss. The lip-gloss back then was the roll-on kind that wasn’t very beneficial at all lol… just really pretty. My mom would always say “Girl you keep lip-gloss in your purse”. This was something that I truly enjoyed. I truly enjoyed rolling on that lip gloss that was going to be gone off my lip within 30 seconds lol. It gave me a good feeling about myself that I really enjoyed.
ColorWars came about because I wanted to create the perfect masstige Black-Owned Cosmetic Company for Black Women by a Black woman. I wanted to make sure that ColorWars offers the best products for Humans and the Environment. Being an African American woman and mother of 3. I know firsthand how hard it is to find lipstick or lip gloss that looks great against our beautifully skin so much so that I was on the brink of losing my love for Cosmetics. The cost of lipsticks, foundations, eyeliner eyebrow pencils, etc. are more than $20 each which to some is a deterrent as well. So, because I can’t afford to spend $20 on lipstick that I should miss out on a great product? The answer is “No”.
I started ColorWars in December 2020 after coming back from a make-up hiatus. I was previously discouraged about my level of expertise within the world of Makeup. I wanted to research everything I could about the Beauty Industry and engulf myself with the knowledge I felt I needed to have in order to be knowledgeable and prosperous. When I launched back in 2020, I didn’t understand the business side of this at all. I had the Entrepreneur spirit in me what I was lacking was the belief within myself that I could be successful at this. Fear is the killer of ALL dreams. I almost let fear KILL ColorWars. I became very afraid of being successful … I know it’s odd because most are afraid to fail. I was afraid that it would work. Why? because I didn’t know what I was going to afterward. This is what we call ” overthinking” don’t do this to yourself. Trust me I was overthinking for about a year. I didn’t really promote my business; I didn’t really tell people about it. Fear had me thinking that no one would buy anything from me because WHO ARE YOU? I am here to tell you that you are the ONE that is going to change everything about your situation. You are doing to break those chains and create generational wealth for your family.
I had to remember that God has made every one of us in his image and I am perfectly imperfect, and I am committed to my growth. Let me explain how God works. Almost a year to the date of me launching ColorWars initially I was on Facebook, and I follow another business owner who at the time was sharing her success and offered a business seminar class with #thekeyacademy. I took that as the sign I’d been praying for and signed up. The Seminar was great every question that was asked was answered in great detail. Also, knowing that there are other people out there at the ground floor with you is also comforting because you can create yourself a support group which we all need. I am very grateful to God for the people he has placed in my life. I truly believe that we must be just as intentional with God as he is with Us.
Currently, ColorWars has 35 plus lip colors between our LoLaLi (Matte) Collection and our Patina (Gloss) Collection. We also offer Lip Liners. All our products are Vegan Friendly, Animal Cruelty-Free, and Highly Pigmented. Our LoLaLi collection is Waterproof and has a fast-drying time. Our Patina Collection is just as pigmented as our LoLaLi Collection.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, not at all. There have been plenty of speed bumps along the way. The two for me was not believing in myself and fear. You have you believe in yourself and be fearless. I am still tapping into the fearless side of me. Fear is definitely a dream killer!!! Don’t allow fear to kill your dreams. Go harder after every “No” because the ” Yes” that you need is just around the corner!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Gosh… this is a hard question because I have so many great memories as a child. As a child, my mom made sure we enjoyed our childhood. We went on trips almost every spring break and summer. We did family trips on spring break and church trips in the summertime. I was truly blessed to be able to visit over half of the states by the time I was 17 years old.
