Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Joyner.
Hi Paul, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
About nine years ago, I heard about a company named Vivint Smart home. My wife and I reached out to them for the security in our home in Mesquite. After using Vivint for about three years in my house, I had the opportunity to join their team and work for them at a Best Buy location. One of the greatest feelings is stories of families who have a peace of mind because of the protection offered by Vivint. This is just like my story and I knew it was the place for me. Over the past six years, I have grown in my influence in our company and am now serve as Area Manager for Vivint East Dallas. I consider it a privilege to help families every day, not just in East Dallas but nationwide.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
As in everything, there are rough spots as you transition into something new. Television host and author Dennis Wholey observed, “Expecting the world to treat you fairly just because you’re a good person is like expecting the bull not to charge you because you’re a vegetarian.” Every new adventure has had its challenges, but over the past 3-4 years, I have found more families referring me to their family members, friends, and neighbors because of the trust I have earned with them. The way I can overcome the everyday challenges is by looking at the photos of the families I have protected in the past and remembering their stories and why they chose Vivint to defend their home and family, but not only Vivint, why they decided Paul Joyner be that person that they wanted to interact with. They wanted someone they could trust. I consider that a true honor and privilege every single day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Vivint, I am invited into a home that is a new purchase, or had a recent break-in, or heard about our company from a friend or neighbor. Over 20 to 30 minutes, I’m able to assess the family’s needs and give them a solution that will solve their problem. But not only that, I’m able to provide them with a value for the product they’re looking for that’s unlike any other. The one thing I tell every single home owner is if they don’t see a value in the product that they’re purchasing, then they should not even buy it. I want a family to get excited to use our affordable cameras that not only will alert them of somebody being on their property, record it, and work as a deterrent and know this will offer protection for their entire family. I can see worry, doubt, and fear wash off people’s faces and turn into a smile and laughter as I leave. For me, it’s not about the sale, and I’m gone. I’m a part of their lives, and they’re part of mine. We call them family, and when I take a photo of them and hang it on my Vivint wall, they are part of my life forever. This isn’t just business for me, it is an opportunity to serve families and make them part of my family. I have the ability to be involved in a family’s life in a unique way. I know their struggles. I know what they’re worried about. I know the vulnerabilities of their homes and their families, but through everything, I’m able to be a voice and an asset of knowledge to help them with any of their needs. Because I’m so connected in the community and the small business world, I have built an extensive referral list of businesses people can trust.. Now they charge me not just for security but also to tell them who to use for their different home needs, from plumbing, electrical, roofing, foundations, or HVAC. I have people in these industries that I know, trust, and have vetted. I know this team of referrals will do a fantastic job just like I did for that home and family. Another thing that sets me apart is the ability to do residential and small businesses. So many of my residential customers own small businesses. Therefore, I’m able to protect that small business with cameras, security, door locks, automation, all the things you can do in a home without a markup of a commercial retail price versus a residential price.
What am I most proud of?
I am pleased that I get to go home to my wife and two daughters every night and know that I have done an excellent job. I have cared for other families with honesty and integrity in every interaction. I treat other families as though they’re mine. I have done my best that day for them. To know that those families are happy, safe, and have peace of mind is life-changing.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I used to define success as being successful in business, having great customers, and taking care of everything well. However, over the past few months, I have shifted that mindset. My wife and daughters deserve the best of me, not just getting what’s left of me at the end of the day. Success is being a great husband, a great dad, and a positive influence in my community.
