Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Suggs.
Hi Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was younger and even into my adult life, being a mother of two daughters, it was always hard for me to pay for expensive hairstyles. Even when I would go to the salon, it would take 8 hours and at least $200 each visit for a style that would last 2 days tops!
I couldn’t find a salon that could offer me a quality hairstyle that also matched my budget. I launched J Design on a Dime in 2015 as an answer to what I feel answers every family’s hair problem.
By the grace of God, my family and I were able to relocate from Milwaukee, WI to McKinney, TX. I was able to continue my hair business while working full-time, launching a podcast with my sister-in-law as well as continuing to be a wife, mother of 3 and the list goes on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely NOT! 🙂 The obstacles that I first ran into were advertising and marketing my work. Gaining clients was a struggle as well as me putting myself out there because I was working out of my home. Eventually, I was able to work in a barbershop as a hair-braider but as soon as I got a groove of things there, we relocated to Texas. Coming to Texas, the same struggles were there but this time I knew no one and was really hesitant to put myself out there due to me working out of my home yet again! Building a new clientele was a struggle and creating space of where both I and the clients would be comfortable was another obstacle for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My specialty is styling protective styles for the whole family at an affordable price. I’m known for executing the protective styles while not breaking the bank! I am most proud of my loyal customers who have been referring clients to me since relocating to Texas. I strive to be flexible and understanding as well as keeping my prices low. My clients are the best and they spoil me! My number one goal is to build confidence in each of my clients because when you look good, you feel good and you do good to others!
What do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck but I do believe that God has played a huge role in my life and business by opening up doors that I could never imagine. I try to stay optimistic about anything that happens to me or my business. There have been times where clients have canceled their appointments and, in this business, it is vital to keep your calendar filled with clients. Sometimes there were weeks when I wasn’t doing any styles. But in the same matter, there are now times where my clients have to book months in advance to get an appointment. God has blessed my business tremendously! Every time I doubt myself or think about giving up, the Lord always reminds me of my assignment!
