Today we’d like to introduce you to Mabel Ríos.
Hi Mabel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am Mabel Ríos, I moved to Dallas Texas in 2016 from Puerto Rico, to start a life from scratch. It is not easy to leave your country and start in a new one without knowing anyone or where to eat your Puerto Rican food and Puerto Rican flavors. It is here in 2017 that I created a Facebook Group called “Boricuas en Dallas”, where I help people promote their Puerto Rican businesses and restaurants, I call myself “La Jeva Boricua”. I got married and divorced here in Texas. From that marriage i had a beautiful baby girl, which is why the court did not let me return to my family in Puerto Rico after the divorce. 2021 was very hard and sad year to go through a divorce being alone and having no family here. This is where I had the initiative to create within the group of Puerto Ricans, a group for women called “Jevas Boricuas”. Thanks to this group we have done many activities between women to fraternize as Puerto Ricans, and support each other as women, mothers, entrepreneurs, and professionals. We have had beautiful activities and met wonderful women. All this thanks to social media, Facebook and Instagram we were able to unite as a family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not really. It’s not easy being away from your family and friends. All of us Puerto Ricans who moved to Dallas Texas to start from scratch away from what we are used to. I was able to create a Group for any woman or man who feels identified for them to feel welcome and have some kind of resource within the community.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Puerto Rican Blogger, I graduated from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico as a Business Administration, and Cosmetology. I was a makeup teacher for television models and I worked as a makeup artist for television, videos, and magazines. I studied but did not complete Human Resources. With this knowledge of being in professional circles is that I dedicate myself to Network Marketing using my social media, promoting businesses, and sales. I personally sell a face and makeup skin care line named Farmasi and I am a Beauty Influencer.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I really miss Puerto Rico, the beach, the countryside, and the best memory I had was growing up healthy next to my grandparents in Vega Alta and Corozal Puerto Rico.
