Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Fish.
Sabrina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’d always had story ideas growing up, but never dreamed a “normal” person could write a book. Obviously, my favorite authors were superstars standing high on pedestals of glimmering perfection who possessed that unattainable “it” quality necessary to be something so special. LOL. As a 28-year-old stay-at-home mom, I’d been struggling with the age-old question of “What do I want to do when I grow up?” or more accurately, “What am I going to do when my kiddo starts school?” So, I started looking into graduate school programs. I figured I’d turn my BA in Political Science into a master’s or Ph.D. and teach at the college level. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it would at least put my dusty degree to some use.
Then, before I could sign up for that graduate degree, I met a woman in the process of writing her first novel. She was close to my age and also had a three-year-old child. I thought, well if she can do it, why not me? And I found my passion.
My first book was published in 2014.
Since then, I’ve published 8 books, have been president of 3 writing organizations, been a writing conference coordinator, and started my own non-profit for romance writers…all while co-owning a trophy & awards company with my husband. In August of 2023, my non-profit, Oklahoma Romance Writers Guild, will host our very first romance-focused writers conference in Oklahoma City. The future is so exciting.
And I’m just getting started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a road full of lessons learned. I’ve had moments where I’ve been in the right place at the right time, but also setback moments where I learned the hard way to trust in myself and my gut instinct over those I saw as “more experienced” authors. And to be honest, I’m still learning. Being a published author doesn’t mean you simply write the book and then hand it over to the publishing professionals.
Being a published author is a business. As an author, YOU ARE the professional.
This business means you must spend time with your rear in the chair busting out words on your keyboard even when you don’t “feel” like it. This business also means you get out there and promote yourself and your work. I can’t express to you how many times I wish I’d majored in graphic design or marketing rather than political science. Because I’ve had to teach myself both of those things. Now I can make a mean promo graphic and whip together a book ad in no time, but when I was first starting, the learning curve was huge!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an award-winning romance author published under the name, Sabrina A. Fish. My fantasy romance series, The Gate Keepers Chronicles is an award-winning series even with only 3 of the 5 books currently released., The first book in the series, Diomere’s Exile, won the 2017 National Readers’ Choice Award and the second book, Diomere’s Healer, won 2020 Best Fiction Book in the Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc. annual conference. This series is about 5 mermaid sisters who are the next gatekeepers between the magic and non-magic worlds. Each sister gets her own book and “love is the key” to not only winning the love interest’s heart but also to taking their place as gatekeepers.
In fact, all my books center around siblings in some way because I am incredibly close to my 3 younger siblings. I pull from my own experiences to give the relationships between siblings an authentic feel.
My most recent releases are paranormal romances from 2 different multi-author series. The first, a second-chance romance about 1 of 3 witch sisters titled, Auras, Heirs, & Witchy Affairs is a 2021 RONE Award nominee. The second, Attracting His Mate is a bear shifter romance about 1 of 5 grizzly bear shifter brothers and his efforts to attract his mate.
