Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiara Anderson.
Hi Tiara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I became interested in skincare when I was a teenager. I was always upset that I wasn’t as gifted as the other girls when it came to applying makeup. The most I could get accomplished with makeup was eyeliner, and I wasn’t too great at that. I explained my frustrations to my mom about not being able to do my own makeup, and she replied “make the best of what you already have”. From that day forward I started practicing doing facials on myself, and I would buy tons of facial products. By the time I started college, my skin became super sensitive. Everything I would buy would seem to further irritate my skin. After spending so much money on products that weren’t working, I decided to research natural ways to heal my skin. I would sit for hours mixing up different clays, oils, fruits, veggies, and any other natural products I could get my hands on. My skin was glowing effortlessly, and I was receiving so many compliments on my skin. Everything we need to sustain ourselves is already naturally provided by the earth. I truly found my passion when I got into skincare. I knew I had to share my knowledge with others that may suffer with skin problems. Then Mother Melanin Cosmetics was birthed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth. The most thing people fail to realize is that entrepreneurship is not easy. You almost tend to work 2x harder for yourself than you do with a company. It takes money to make money. The startup cost of a business totally blew my mind. Organic products tend to costs a pretty penny, but we always want to give our customers the best. As a business owner, you have to be mindful of your finances, your orders, and your customer service, and you have to find balance. I would work a 10–12-hour shift at my job and come home with orders piled up. I would be extremely tired, but if I can contribute to another company’s dream I can definitely contribute to my own. I learned you have to be consistent in everything that pertains to your business. Things got smoother for me as I gained more knowledge about what actually keeps a business afloat. I decided to get a degree in business management from Southern University in Shreveport where I learned how to maintain a business.
We’ve been impressed with Mother Melanin Cosmetics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
For over five years, I’ve dedicated my life to finding clean and natural alternatives for my everyday life. From that research Mother, Melanin Cosmetics was born. Mother Melanin Cosmetics is a vegan skincare brand that specializes in earth-based skincare products. From the beginning, I wanted to create a product that would not only focus on natural skincare, but most importantly a skincare solution for people who deal with acne, hyperpigmentation, eczema, psoriasis, and other underlying skin issues. It’s a luxury product that is made for you to feel good, smell good, and most importantly look good! The big brands that we see in supermarkets are certainly a status quo, but they aren’t always made with people of color in mind. They often include unnecessary chemicals than can do more harm than good, and usually strips your skin of its natural oils. I take pride in knowing that our company has done so much research to provide the best organic skincare items, and will continue to do more research to contribute to our customer’s healthy skin journey. Mother Melanin Cosmetics wants the readers to know were just getting started, and will continue to release more products that our customers will love. We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m not sure that I believe in luck, but I do believe in what I put in the world is what I will receive. I believe that we’re all blessed with special gifts, and skincare is my gift. I try to put all of my energy into just being a good person. I pray every day for not only my success, but for those who are also trying to do their best and find their purpose. I truly believe that because of my humility I’ve been blessed with many things, and people that have led to my success in life and business. That’s not luck, it’s God for sure.
