Conversations with Jennifer Huff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Huff.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey there! I’m Jen, also known as Nytlin. I am a diverse Freelance Artist.

My favorite thing to paint is Landscapes and Dragons, or general fantasy illustrations with acrylics.

Most recently I finished a 20-piece strong, 8″ x 10″ Acrylic on Wood, Dragon Series. I painted 20+ Dragons (some have more than one in them! ) in more of a slice of life kind of way. Nearly all of which was done on my Twitch Stream. ( I have had to take a break from the streaming, but I do plan to return this summer! )

Over the years I have done commission work from character art, portraits, and tattoo designs. I have also dabbled in Chainmail, Stained Glass, and woodburning. Its hard to pick just one thing. Iv even touched some jewelry making with crystals and sculpey from time to time.

I’m also a Nurodivergent Artist ~ ADHD, guess, that’s why I can’t pick one thing! A Podcaster, Artist instructor, and avid Gamer.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
An artist’s Style is an intangible way of showing the identity of an artist, its also every growing and changing. I enjoy seeing my growth.

So what sets any artist apart? Who they are, sets them apart. What they have seen and experienced and what they wish others to experience when they see what they have created.

I want people to enjoy Fantasy art as much as I do. See dragons the way I see them. See fairies the way I imagine them! So I want people to experience an emotion… I do too! I want you to feel safe, or curious, or giddy seeing a Dragon buying Dumplings from a shop.

Sure they are powerful Mythological creatures, that may or may not have ever existed, who cares! I want that childhood wonder to fill your mind for just a moment. To make the horrible things that go on in our tangible world, to melt away even for a moment, cause you can see yourself there, like you’re the one peeking through the bushes to see the sleeping dragon.

But I’ve been told it’s my use of colors, lighting, and odd things I like to paint on!

Such as my CD Octopus! So I made a 5? foot? Piece of Art, made out of old Windows 95, printer installer, and AOL Online CDs from my childhood. That I painted on top of. Because I didn’t have the heart to throw that much plastic out. So I found a way to revitalize em, and honor the memory of an era.

The Second is a 4 panel Wall screen made 100% out of wood. Each panel is … 2 – 1/2 x 6 feet tall, and I am painting different landscape scenes on each panel, that connect as one large piece on each side.

I also have deeply loved color theory since the days of undergrad, despite starting from black and white mediums. ( I started with pencils in highschool) Though I think because I started understanding Value really well, and then brought the color into the mix. It really helps direct the how, and the why, on the way I do things.

Also, I have the advantage of knowing how to make models and textures for video games, how to see in my head a 3D space that doesn’t exist yet…. and applying all the knowledge that goes both with Traditional art, and Art Creation for game design, further molded how I approached my paintings. It’s the Technical meets the creative.

But over the years… especially the last two, I have learned to see my own style and embrace it.

It takes countless hours to develop. I mean think about it, what is an artist’s style? It’s how they manipulate a medium in a recognizable pattern. It is muscle memory. Sure the first 100 circles I drew sucked, but after the 10,000 circles, I drew… my hand is just new. My shoulder just -knew- how much it needed to move and to shift.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I would say if you only know me for my Art, One might be surprised to find out I am Also Co-creator for a Podcast called What The Dice?! That’s free and on any streaming app we have found that we can submit to.

It is a Tabletop RPG. (Role-playing game) That is set in Pathfinder, and we literally record our game sessions and edit them up to be an Actual Play Podcast that feels more like an old Radio Drama.
