Rising Stars: Meet Lori Washko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Washko.

Hi Lori, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been practicing yoga for more than 20 years. As a dancer in my younger days, I was instantly drawn to yoga as a form of exercise and stretching. Over the years, yoga became much more than physical for me. The stress of walking through difficult seasons (including several miscarriages and breast cancer) led me to appreciate my personal yoga practice in a completely new light and pushed me to explore wellness travel. I attended my first retreat, and I was hooked! I decided to encourage others as I had been encouraged, so I embarked on the adventure of acquiring my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification. Later I also completed trauma-sensitive training, enabling me to serve girls rescued from the sex trafficking trade.

Breathing, meditating on God’s word, and resting in his presence, both on and off the mat are vital parts of practicing faith-based yoga. I believe that when we take time to restore, heal and fill ourselves, we have much more to offer those around us and a greater capacity to serve. God created us to enjoy life to the fullest extent, which includes enjoying a healthy body, creating community, and having fun.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Because I chose the path of faith-based yoga, I guess I have been a bit of an outsider in the yoga world.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My personal mission is to challenge, empower and restore others through faith-based yoga classes, workshops, and retreats. I am in the process of expanding my wellness retreat business because I have a true passion for empowering and encouraging women to give themselves permission to take a break and do something life-giving for themselves. I’m not talking about just a vacation somewhere. These trips are designed for women to reconnect with themselves, nature, and their creator. Everything is planned out from the moment they arrive at the destination. So many women do all the planning and so much more for their careers and families. Wellness retreats are an opportunity to let someone else take care of them. My goal is for retreat attendees to return home restored, inspired, and refreshed. Our next one is coming up in May of 2022 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I became a yoga instructor at the age of 52! It’s never too late to start something new or find a way to encourage others.
