Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Vo.
Curtis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always remember being a part of yearbook since elementary school. I was always interested in telling stories about events going on in school, or about students that exceeded, but I was never a great writer. Naturally, I was drawn to photography to be able to encapsulate moments that would be able to tell a story better than I could ever write. However, I was never able to have my own personal camera to do the thing I loved most, and that meant that I would have to work with what I did have. I would use my phone to do photography throughout middle and early high school, before deciding that I would find a job in order to buy my first camera. At first, I just saw photography as a creative outlet and a passion and didn’t realize that I could create a real business out of it until I saw my friends needing senior portraits. From there, I created my own website, email, and portfolio in order to gain more exposure and grow as a business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own photography business has definitely been difficult. As a newer business, it was difficult to come by the first couple of clients. Even though I put countless hours into developing a website, portfolio, and social media, it doesn’t necessarily translate to success. A struggle I’ve come across with as well is having clients that have flaked completely, though that has taught me a valuable lesson in the business world.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a local photographer in the Dallas metroplex, specializing in portraits, events, and sports. I’m currently applying to be part of the UT Dallas sports media team. And love being part of student media. I’m most proud of being able to capture moments that in 10, 20, or 30 plus years that clients look back and smile upon. Being able to see the joy in people’s faces, and telling stories with a simple image has no better feeling.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity in Dallas. It’s truly a melting pot of different cultures, and I get to immerse myself in it every day, whether it’s at school, work, or going out to eat. I love being able to enjoy the city aspect, as well as the suburban life of Dallas, as it’s such a big city with lots of different things to do as well. The only thing I dislike (and I think everyone can agree on), is traffic.
