Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Sanchez.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised in Oak Cliff, Texas, I grew up on a steady stream of Nintendo 64 and Lisa Frank. I knew I liked scrapbooking and collecting crazy scissors, but I never would have imagined myself as an artist. On a whim, I took an Advertising 101 class at SMU and realized, “Oh, shit – I can make money off this thing I’d do for free”. After graduating from college, I worked in-house for Omni Hotels Corporate office for a year, skipped on over to Br-dge Creative Studios with an awesome mentor, Robbie Good, for about 4 years, then started my own practice at Jenn Sanchez Design. Growing up an only child, I’ve always kind of danced to the beat of my own drum. Working for myself – freelancing full time – has been TOUGH but absolutely fucking worth it. I love the independence. I love creating. I love meeting new people, helping them make cool shit, and I’m grateful every day I get the chance to do it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Let’s just say every tax season I have an existential crisis. Not because I don’t enjoy the work, but mostly because I forget sometimes that I’m running a business. (“Am I an artist at heart or an artist for pay? Can I be both? Am I making the right career choice?”) There are so many back-end duties no one tells you about when you become a full-time freelancer. On top of being a designer, I’m also an accountant, a project manager, a social media marketer, and a professional cat wrangler. I’m adding all of that to my resume. My daily reminder keeps me grounded through: nothing worth having comes easy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I don’t even know how to quantify myself from the list of drop-down options – that’s where I’m at in life right now. I consider myself an artist/creative AND a business. Jenn Sanchez Design is my creative practice specializing in visual branding and print design, although thanks to my background at Br-dge Creative Studios I’ve learned how to wear a lot of creative hats. I’m most proud of my work with local businesses in my neighborhood because I love the one-one relationship I get to have with clients. Bread Zeppelin, Dallas Arts District, Coco Andre Chocolatier, and Anns Health Food Center are just a couple of brands I’ve had the pleasure of working with. There’s nothing quite like seeing your work out in the wild!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Likes: I never run out of things to do in Dallas, whether that’s go on a hike, eat some tasty ethnic food, or kick back at a live show.
Dislikes: Dallas is not the most accessible if you don’t have a car and it pains me. Ideally, I could get around to most places on kickass public transportation or by bike but the drivers are crazy here and the roads don’t make any sense. Also – we could 1000% use more green spaces here. Nature is therapy.
