Meet Dr. Nick Chamberlain of Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense in Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Nick Chamberlain.

Dr. Nick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Chamberlain Studios started as a franchise in 1981 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. I began the company my senior year after graduating from high school and have overseen its development ever since. Over the last 37 years, we have grown from a small neighborhood karate school run by myself to a couple of full-time schools and over a dozen busy after school programs run by our group of dedicated instructors.

The growth of our martial arts and fitness programs has been the result of the hard work and dedication of our group of skilled instructors. Starting with basic Kenpo karate classes in 1981, we have grown to offer a wide variety of programs and classes including: complete martial arts programming for the entire family, ages 4 and up; summer and holiday break karate camps at our brick and mortar locations and over 50 summer camps offered in conjunction with most of the larger private schools in the Dallas area. Corporate team building programs incorporating self-defense and awareness training; martial arts themed kids’ birthday parties; cutting edge fitness programs; our annual martial arts tournament and a supporting curriculum of books, DVDs, manuals and instructor training materials.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our business is people based with the emphasis being on teaching and inspiring others to bring out their best! Business growth is based on our ability to attract and inspire instructors that share our vision and purpose for the martial arts, which is: to enrich the lives of those in our community through the development of character-based martial artists.

Our greatest challenge is sharing an understanding that martial arts can be a lifetime pursuit that offers the potential to change peoples lives for the better, through personal confidence, empowerment, and character.

Please tell us about Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense.
The strength of Chamberlain Studios is in the wide variety of talents that our instructors bring to the table combined with our shared goal of creating a martial arts family that gives back to the community that it serves.

Through our free community outreach programming in self-defense training and bully awareness programs and our support of local education and charities through fundraising events, we give back tens of thousands of dollars in services annually to the neighborhoods and communities we serve.

We have been recognized by the Dallas Chamber of Commerce as “Business of the Year” for our efforts to reach out and help our local communities and received recognition on many occasions for our support of charities and groups that impact our local neighborhoods.
