Conversations with MET Salon Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to MET Salon Co.

Hello MET Salon Co, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Our salon company was opened in 2018 by myself (Megan Murillo) and my co-owner Elizabeth Teller. We had previously worked together for several years and shared a strong passion for growing people in our industry and creating an environment and workspace unlike other salons we had seen or worked in. We wanted to have a space where salon professionals could really build a beautiful life and be supported and uplifted by each other. We also wanted to have a space where our guests could feel comfortable and confident to see any of us and know they would be receiving an equally elevated experience. We are committed to this ideal and strive to make it a reality by putting our team and guests at the forefront of every decision we make.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We opened MET Salon Co, July 2018. So, we were open for just shy of 2 years before Covid hit and respectfully changed and created challenges for our entire industry. We like so many salons had to close our doors and live in a world of chaos and uncertainty for the next two years and even still, to this day it feels like we are continuing to navigate a world or ‘”new”. Like so many others, having to be closed was challenging but what we couldn’t have expected was coming back to the emotional roller coaster that we would. Every good stylist is just as much a good friend, confidant, and sometimes a therapist. We spend so much time with our guests, we know so much, the ins and outs of their daily lives and relationships. While we were enduring the challenges of the last two years personally, we were also on a journey with so many others. Some were beautiful stories of strength and resilience and others were incredibly tough stories of loss and at times hopelessness. Although we have all been witness these moments of grief and struggle throughout our careers, to navigate our own personal ups and downs alongside each other and our guests in such mass was something that was both extremely difficult and incredibly beautiful. To so intimately feel the emotional turmoil of so many you love and at the same time have the opportunity to be a part in the healing of that is a beautiful thing that not many get the chance to do. Also, to have and feel so much love from others while you yourself are working on healing your own heart and mind, it’s just so inspiring there’s just nothing like it. So, I’d say we faced a huge challenge as new small business owners, one like no other and hopefully one like we will never face again But, we came out on top and with some serious business wits and life lessons you can’t come by easily, so should anything else like to rear an ugly head at us I think we would be ready for anything!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our salon company specializes in color. We create all different types of looks from that all-over perfectly blended and seamless rich color to a beautifully melted balayage hand-painted to perfection. We are most proud of our strong focus on education. In a creative industry that is ever-evolving, it’s so important to never stop working on your craft and skill and challenge yourself to step out of your box and work hard to constantly step up your game. All the stylists at the salon invest personally in their continuing education and as owners, we provide many opportunities for education in and out of the salon for our team.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be flexible! Things evolve, and as they do holding on to anything in your mind whether it’s an idea or laid out plan will only take you down the hard path. As the world wields its weight around, you have to be ready to change with it. Figure out early why you are doing whatever it is that you are doing and anytime you face a challenge make decisions from that space and success will follow you. If you have to change a plan all will be well as long as you are following your why. I wish we would have known that everything wouldn’t go exactly how we thought it would and that it was still all going to turn out ok.
