Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie McGaugh.
Hi Maggie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had my son in early 2020 and found myself with a lot of free time because he slept a lot (lucky, I know!). I wanted to use that time to find a new hobby, be creative, and make money. I found a breadbox that needed some love, so I painted it. From that moment I was hooked! Then my husband and I began finding furniture on the side of the road, so I would take those items home, give them a new life, and sell them for a profit. My audience on social media really started loving following my process and story and I ended up going viral on TikTok and Instagram. I grew my following from about 3,000 followers to almost 2 million now.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Overall, it’s been a pretty smooth journey to get where I am today. The hardest part has been dealing with negative attention online and finding the right work-life balance. Between being a mom to a toddler, a wife, and a business owner, I stay BUSY. I’m constantly managing working with brands, content creation, flipping furniture, developing and selling two digital courses, and multiple social media platforms. I’m still not perfect, but I’ve gotten a lot better at managing my time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a furniture flipper! I mostly find furniture for free on the side of the road and give it a new life with paint and resell it for a profit. After sharing my work on social and going viral, I am also now considered an influencer (which is super strange to me and will probably never feel normal!). I work with brands and share the things I love – and the crazy things that happen to me – every day with my audience on social media. My favorite things to flip are dressers and my favorite style is mid-century modern. I’ve spent nearly two years flipping furniture and I was so successful that my husband and I were able to purchase an Airbnb. We recently flipped the entire home in just one week – it was exhausting but very rewarding. What sets me apart from other furniture flippers is that I find most of my furniture in the trash and I’m not ashamed of it! My audience loves it, too. I don’t just share what goes right, I’m honest about the entire process (like when I recently dropped a dresser and broke the legs!!). I also share how much I make on my pieces to be totally transparent and authentic with my audience.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My biggest advice for finding a mentor or networking, in general, is to utilize social media. Find people with a similar follower count that you already have and reach out to them and create a community. I’ve been friends online with people that flip furniture and do DIY from the very beginning. We recently had a huge weekend retreat together. Now we all have millions of followers all together and it was so cool to be able to grow and learn from each other. What has worked well for me is just figuring things out as I go, but being open to learning from experts as well. Realizing that every journey is different and I have to do what is best for me has been a great lesson.
