Today we’d like to introduce you to Vikki Morehead.
Hi Vikki, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was introduced to hair by my maternal grandmother who raised me. She was what they called back then a Kitchen beautician. Our home was filled with women and children every weekend getting their hair ready for the week. Everybody would say that my grandmother had growing hands which meant if you were dealing with some kind of hair issue, she could fix it so that your hair would grow. Her nurturing instinct made me want to be able to do that same thing for people.
Originally from Washington DC., I moved here to North Texas seven years ago. What I thought would be retirement after 30 years in the Hair Business turned into something very different. I saw the need for natural hair care here. People embracing the hair GOD gave them. Beautiful black women and biracial children walking around with just a dried-out fro. Not aware of their potential to do so much more with their hair. Thus, Tanglez and Loxz Hair Salon were back in business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, the experience has been rewarding and comforting knowing that I am able to continue my business in hair care in Texas. Due to Covid-19, what once was a necessity has now become a luxury to most households. Between the spike in the prices of hair care goods, and meeting the needs of your clients, whose household has also been impacted due to Covid, has become the most challenging thus far.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in natural and processed hair for Black women, men, and biracial families. I am becoming most known as a Sisterlock Technician. I am proud to say that I will be receiving my license shortly to become 1 of 11 stylists to be certified trainees in the State of Texas. What sets me apart from the rest is my ability to be functional in all hair types, and hair textures.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in SE. Washington DC. Looking back my neighborhood was rough but it was all I knew. My cousin and I would roam around here and there. Just being mischievous kids. To keep me out of trouble my grandmother and mom got together and sent me to a catholic school. Far from boys and trouble in general.
