Meet Lindsay Whittenberg of Lindsay’s Art Cart in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Whittenberg.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lindsay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It has been a crazy, exciting and at times scary journey getting to where I am today. Back in college, I began as a pre-physical therapy major. One day I found myself dissecting a cat and I thought to myself, “This is not going to work.” Could I do it? Yes. Did I want to? No. After a lot of soul-searching and long talks with my mom, I decided to take a leap of faith and major in Visual Studies (aka. Art Education) with an emphasis in Photography. I had always loved my art classes in school but somehow the thought of becoming an Art teacher had never crossed my mind. I mean, didn’t you have to wear tie-dyed shirts and watch Bob Ross all the time to be an art teacher?

Thinking back, art class was one of the only classes I looked forward to. The freedom to create whatever you could imagine was overwhelming. It was a feast for the senses. The smell of the sharpened pencils. Watching yellow and blue swirl together until they created a whole new color. The texture of the clay in my hands. It was magic. And so I decided that I would teach art, and teach art I did.

After graduating from Texas Tech, I moved back to my hometown of Arlington and taught at West Elementary in AISD. I loved my job. Was it challenging at times? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, I was getting paid to draw, paint, sculpt, etc and share my passion with young artists! It was the dream job! It wasn’t until the birth of my first child that I ever considered leaving. I was heartsick not being able to see her all day and after a year of working full-time and being a mom full-time, I decided to step away from teaching to spend more time with her.

Becoming a stay-at-home mom was a huge transition. I loved the flexibility to do more with my daughter, but there was a part of me that missed the classroom. So, I decided to bring the classroom to my home! I offered summer art lessons, and people actually signed their kids up! With time, parents were wanting classes too! I started booking private events in homes throughout the metroplex and eventually, things expanded to public venues in Arlington and Fort Worth! We were no longer confined to dining room tables!

In the Fall of 2017, I discovered The Hive at Sugar Bee Sweets in downtown Arlington. It is the dream location for open-to-the-public events. A huge room full of tables and it smells of cupcakes! I have since had two events there and they have both exceeded my expectations. I am currently working on a calendar of events at Sugar Bee Sweets and Urban Alchemy & Wine Bar (set to open at the beginning of 2018) that will offer everything from hand-stamped metal to screen-printing to calligraphy. My goal is to offer as many different mediums as possible.

Lindsay’s Art Cart has truly taken on a life of its own. It has grown organically through social media and word-of-mouth and I am beyond excited about what this next year has in store.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Surprisingly, it’s been relatively smooth. The biggest challenge has been finding new and interesting projects.

WOW Lindsay! I loved reading your story. What an exciting journey it’s been! I think it’s great that you offer so many different medias, as not everyone likes the same thing. Wishing you great success! Only wished I lived closer to take one of your classes. Here’s to bringing out the creativity in others! Best of luck to you in 2018! I met Lindsay through my daughter-in-law and she has such a cheerful personality! I’m sure her classes will fill up quickly and spread by word-of-mouth. ENJOY!
