Meet Maria Becerra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Becerra.

Maria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Lubellas started almost 2 years ago when covid started. Me and my husband we both work in the restaurant industry for years and with covid we both ended without a job, so he told me to start making cakes and he help me out delivering and selling them with friends and family. So, I did, I started baking mostly cheesecakes, banana bread, muffins, and basic things. We started baking more every week and then people stater asking for cakes, so I was then baking cakes, but then they wanted custom cakes and honestly never decorate cakes before, only basic cakes and for family but never cakes like with a theme or more detail ones, so I took the challenge and now I am making 5 tiers wedding cakes and any cake they order me. The name of Lubellas came from out 2 daughters: Luciana and Isabella, I call them Lu and Bella and I realized if I put them together sound good Lubellas, and Patisserie because we always had the dream of having our own coffee place where we can sell all kind of pastries, so that is how we came up with the name of Lubellas Patisserie.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, but as my mom says: if it was easy then anyone can do it! Some days are crazy, my husband is still working part-time so we have to dive ourselves to make this happen. especially with 2 little ones in the house. and now with the opening of the store, it hasn’t been easy at all either. we never thought this was going to be such a big challenge, we didn’t know anything about opening a place but we have been learning along the way, like permits, plans, contraction, and everything. We have had a lot of bumps on the way but we are getting closer to get the store open soon.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do a lotttt, from Conchas, pan de muerto, and Rosca de Reyes (all Mexican sweet bread), to croissants, Danish, banana bread muffins, scones, babka, cakes, tarts, etc. I like to do all kinds of pastries; I love to decorate cakes but I also love to do pastries. I try to make different pastries every weekend or for special occasions like Mother’s Day thanksgiving or Christmas. I just love and enjoy to bake!!! I don’t want to say I specialize on something; I can only say: that I just love to bake everything! But I am honestly, very proud about wedding cakes because I never thought I was capable of making such big cakes.

I don’t think something sets me apart from the others or I don’t see it that way, I think we all have our own way to do things and there is business for everyone. I like to do everything from scratch, even though that requires more work, but at the end, you have a unique product. All the buttercream for cakes, the fillings, the tarts, the batters, etc. everything is from scratch and uses really good quality ingredients. We try our best every day and with the goal of getting our store open soon.

What makes you happy?
First of all, my Family makes me happy! Just thinking on how proud my kids are about me and how happy they are when they tell people their mom bakes and that their parents are opening a bakery, that makes me so happy. and of course: Baking and decorating!!! again baking makes me happy and decorating cakes too! is just something I can’t explain. I am always thinking about: what I am going to bake today? or: How I am going to decorate this cake? My family is the fuel for everything.
