Exploring Life & Business with Lily Sanchez of Lily Catherine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Sanchez.

Hi Lily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In early October of 2018, I launched my business. I didn’t think much of it. I was just 13 years old, and I wanted to make a little money of my own. After a short period of time, I was sucked into the entrepreneur world- I was (and still am) obsessed with growing my business. I began selling unique beaded bracelets and necklaces to my classmates through 8th grade and my freshman year of high school (2020). As all of us know, the pandemic provided an extensive amount of alone time. I utilized my year-long quarantine to truly kick off my small business. I created an Instagram, then an Etsy, and continuously educated myself. When I returned to school as a sophomore, my business exploded. I gained overwhelming support from my family, school, and community, and began shipping hundreds of Etsy orders from my bedroom to customers nationwide. That spring, I joined the Waxahachie Farmers Market for six months, gaining amazing connections. I began having pop-up shops around town- The Oaks, Vita, as well as various Christmas markets. I created my own website and truly started to learn the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. In October, I met Gabrielle Calvary and we began planning to sell my totes to her for her plant and book shop, Paper Leaves (@paperleaves_shop). Soon after, I was connected with The Common Sage Boutique (@thecommonsageboutique) and began stocking my products in their shop. I am continuing to search for more shops who are ready to support my small business and help us grow together. Throughout the years, I have extended my products to not only jewelry, but bags, accessories, clothing, and decor. As my four-year anniversary approaches this fall, I will begin to apply for colleges, to further educate myself in business and many of my other interests. I have learned so much about business in the past four years- strategy, design, production, and efficiency. However, more importantly, I have learned balance, love, and the unfading importance of community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe any small businesses are granted a smooth ride. Even if I was given funds to jumpstart my business, a partner, or some sort of safety net- which I was not- I still had to mature from who I was before. Balance is definitely the hardest thing that I am still learning. Secondly, social media marketing can be very complex and time-consuming, especially since I haven’t been able to be educated in business or entrepreneurship yet. I believe my college classes will teach me so much.

As you know, we’re big fans of lily catherine. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I sell a large variety of jewelry, accessories, clothing, and bags. 90% of my products are handmade, highlighting my personal style. I like to keep my theme fun, but simple. I include lots of greens and natural colors, as well as bright colors. Last year I invested in an embroidery machine, and I have been making embroidered sweatshirts and totes, as well as custom orders. I also create my own patterns for skirts and tops and create them from scratch. I am looking forward to moving into more fashion design and clothing, as well as a few home decor pieces that reflect my artistic side.

What matters most to you?
My community matters so much to me. Through thick and thin, the love my city and school has shown me over the last few years is incredible. Interviews, purchases, or simply visiting my pop-up shops makes me feel so loved and valued. More specifically, my family grants me with undying support. Between transporting my items for pop-up shops, telling their friends, sending me ideas, sitting with me at markets, and so much more. I can’t believe the selflessness that so many people in my town have. I take pride in being independent, but I would not be where I was without my community.
