Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyon Godwin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kenyon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was inspired to be a doctor at 12 years old when my mother suffered a heart attack. She did not have health insurance or the means for proper care, and I felt I needed to do something about it.
I enlisted in the United States Air Force at 17 years old and worked in the medical field and it reminded me of the dreams I had when I was younger. I loved helping save lives and helping people live a better life.
Although I wanted to be a doctor, I did not want to prescribe medication, perform surgery or deliver babies! Fortunately for me, my anatomy and physiology instructor was a chiropractor and taught us the body using stories from his office. I had never heard of chiropractic but was intrigued with inspiration. This was a discipline that was natural, works with the body, teaches nutrition, exercise, resting, healing without drugs or surgery.
I began to pursue it with that amount of information for the next 7 years while in the USAF. I finally finished my Bachelor’s degree and received my first adjustment, 3 months prior to leaving the military to start chiropractic school! From the first day of class, I knew this was what I was supposed to do, doctor means teacher. I get to educate, speak, adjust and transform lives daily.
I graduated in 2010, started my practice with a lot of faith and a little money. I am a dedicated student of life and business so as I learn, I grow and that is reflected in my practice. In 7 years, we have added team members, modalities, equipment, technology, services, business practices and our influence in the community.
We are now an award-winning office from Arlington’s favorite chiropractor/wellness center, patient choice award, and 2016 Veteran-owned Small Business of the Year winner for the Arlington Chamber of Commerce.
To sum it up, I got here today by faith, favor, family, dedication, commitment, sacrifice, personal development, and an incredible amount of support.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road, a winding road, some gravel, dirt, steep hills, and potholes. I have faced many struggles, from insufficient capital to begin with (banks weren’t given loans when I started), learning the business along the way, personal sacrifices, inexperience as a business leader, bad decisions, and helping people learn to take responsibility for their health.
Active Family Wellness Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our office is a holistic chiropractic and wellness center, one of two offices in the state of Texas that offers 8 Weeks to Wellness (R). We focus on adjusting the spine, the power source of the body, to improve health, mobility, and function. We address the behaviors that need to be modified and corrected versus treating the symptoms (Cause vs Effect). We help people, move well, eat well, think well and sleep well without drugs and surgery.
We believe health and function should be available for everyone and that our health is our biggest asset. Often times we pay more attention to our homes, cars, etc., and neglect our bodies when it comes to maintenance. We are changing the paradigm to wellness and life without limitations instead of seeking health when I have limitations. Posture, alignment, improper movement lead to dysfunction, disability, and disease.
Not to mention, the common link with cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and others is metabolic syndrome. This syndrome is the effect of our lifestyle choices that make us susceptible to these disease processes. Our office has a system to detect and correct metabolic syndrome. A special objective way of testing called a wellness score that helps predict disease, disability, and dysfunction.
I am the most proud of our customer service, attention to patients and results. These things are also what we are the most known for. I often hear, “you are more than a chiropractor!” We help people with so many things, not because we treat their diseases or conditions, but we listen, examine and therefore help their bodies function properly. The chiropractic premise is the power that made the body, heals the body!
In the DFW what sets us apart, is our customer service, skill set, constant training/development, experience in healthcare, faith and our process. There are many offices but I believe who we are, why we do what we do and how we do it is compared to none.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
A mix between winning the awards and discovering undiagnosed cancer, saving a patient’s life.
