Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Obiwuru.
Hi Tabitha, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been plus size all my life and I was raised a little bit uniquely. My father noticed I was frequently being teased for being fat. I remember one year, I think I was about 9 or 10, the children during one year of summer camp made up a song about me and would chant it daily “big, big meat, big meat greasy”. I would come home upset and furious I would threaten that I was not going to go back because of how they treated me. My father sat me down and told me first of all “Nobody wants a bone but a dog” & “baby girl, don’t allow anyone to run you out from anywhere you choose to be”. These two phrases stuck with me even today. So, I chose to start making a way for plus-size women to be seen and appreciated so I started Tabu Thick N Sassy Plus size magazine and from there it evolved into Thick N Sassy Plus Size Fashion Shows, and from there just simply Thick N Sassy. when I decided to go from a magazine to strictly fashion shows I was advised that nobody wants to see fat girls on the runway. I beg to differ because big girls are making statements.
My fashion show caters to plus-size women only. sizes 12-24 (We go higher if we can find the right designers to accommodate). I ask God to send me the broken. Women who are suffering with poor self-esteem. We take those women and we reprogram how and what they think about themselves. Even women who are not suffering from low self-esteem notice a big change within themselves by the end of our training. I am all about uplifting and motivating and i promote and educate under the umbrella of sisterhood and get back to the basics of getting to know ourselves.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Marketing. no one knows how to market my business.
