Today we’d like to introduce you to Alesa Gerald.
Hi Alesa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I graduated from the University of North Texas in the spring of 2020 with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and a specialization in public relations. Growing up, people always told me that I talked too much. I’m sure they didn’t mean it as a good thing then, but I turned it into a career. That’s how I ended up pursuing public relations. I wanted a job that’s about connecting people and telling a really good story.
My first full-time job out of college was at Forefront Living, a non-profit senior living provider in Dallas. It was the last place I expected to start my career, but I’m very grateful I did. Aside from learning about the ins and outs of the senior care industry, I also met some of the kindest people and the most remarkable residents.
I began working for Bernadette Davis Communications in February of 2022 and have enjoyed it ever since. It’s great to work with people with so much experience. I am constantly learning from Bernadette and the rest of the team.
I enjoy what I do, but I’m not all work. On the weekends I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family and on the weekdays, I binge-watch as much TV as I can while I wait for the next season of The Bachelorette to return. And in between that, I serve as a committee chairman in my chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I am blessed to have a pretty charmed life, but navigating the workforce as a Gen-Zer has its challenges. As a girl who pretty much oozes ‘Elle Woods’ energy, it wasn’t always well-received by those I worked with along the way. I learned to adapt to the work norms by finding a mentor or someone I could confide in personally and professionally. My mentor helped me understand how to better communicate with those older than me and bridge the gap between my coworkers and me.
I learned that typically as long as you lead with respect and kindness, others do the same. When in a work setting, everyone has the same goal – to get the job done. So, as long as you focus on the task, you’ll have more commonalities than differences. Maybe, once the work is done, you’ll find some non-work common ground as well.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It’s hard to explain what I do to people not in the media industry (I don’t even think my dad understands it yet). As a PR specialist, I take my client’s social media platforms and enhance their brand engagement. Essentially, I’m a ghostwriter, but primarily for social media and blogs. I love waking up every morning and getting the challenge of mastering a voice completely different from my own. I think what sets me apart from others is my ideas. Because I’ve grown up with social media, I’m always thinking, ‘what would look good to a follower,’ and that’s where I get my best ideas.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always looking to work with people on a variety of projects. I’ve been working on writing a children’s book and having it illustrated by my childhood friend, Brendan Walters. It’s due to be finished by the end of the year. I also collaborate with other writers to help edit their books or any other collateral they might need.
