Life & Work with Katherine Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Robinson.

Hi Katherine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I was a child, I always felt like the odd person out of the group. No matter the setting, church, school, or even in my family life. Whenever I noticed I didn’t measure up when it came to popularity, vocalizing my opinions, or expressing emotions my natural instinct was to stay low and find my own group that would accept me for who I really was.

When my family moved to Dallas, TX in 2012. I thought it would be perfect time to reinvent myself. I learned how to communicate effortlessly through a screen and create a genuine personable relationship with people with the same interests as me. Unfortunately, I was having a hard time expressing myself to people face to face. I always came off as shy or outspoken. I’d spend a lot of alone time writing poetry or playing music but I wasn’t able to create my first original piece until 2021. Since then, I’ve been able to express myself through art and inspire others with my ideas.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After graduating in 2016 I was sure I was set to start college and experience life away from my family. The summer was so chaotic, so I decided to attend community college instead. It only took one semester for me to realize that higher learning didn’t interest me enough to pay out of pocket for it. I decided to drop out and work full-time until I could afford to pursue my dreams. 3 years of working my ass off and I felt like I had nothing to show for it. When in reality, I gained experience with managing money, living on my own, and creating lasting friendships in real life. In the meantime, I was simultaneously strengthening the online relationships I had developed over time. Little did I know that a virus was on the way to help me jumpstart my passion for music, art, and giving to the less fortunate.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a self-taught visual artist. I mostly work with acrylic. I’m working on strengthening my photography skills in the near future. My inspiration comes from psychedelic visions that I see in my dreams. Some are original photos I’ve transferred info canvas with my own style added. I prefer cartoon-style mediums but I’m hoping to expand to do more portraits and landscapes over time. I’m most proud of myself for keeping up this hobby for as long as I have. I have found that believing in yourself is the first step to succeeding in whatever you want to do.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
There are many young Americans suffering from mental health problems, spending so much time alone during a period of hardship. I found peace in painting and other arts which allows me to motivate myself to do more. If we engage young minds in creative jobs, I’m positive they will be more motivated to accomplish goals. I have completed so many paintings during this pandemic, I want to show them to the world and bring positive vibes back to the city. Inspiring my generation to continue to be creative in times of confusion and hardship is a legacy I hope to leave behind after I am gone.
