Exploring Life & Business with Jana Osborn of Barnett Sweets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana Osborn.

Jana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was younger, I never thought of baking as a career. I made one of my first cakes in high school for a friend’s birthday, I remember having so much fun when baking, decorating, and the joy of seeing her reaction to her cake. That joy was the first spark for my future, but I still considered it a hobby and pursued a corporate career in Environmental work.

Flash forward, another one of my friends wanted me to make a wedding cake for her daughter. I felt that spark again, but this time bigger than ever. I began to work day and night on how to make the perfect cake for her wedding, something no one had eaten before. I worked at my day job and went home to my passionate job of mastering the best cake anyone had ever tasted. Everyone at my day job received packages of cakes on their seats every morning and gave me critiques on how to improve my recipe. Most of my coworkers were truck drivers, always on the move, and they were my biggest fans. I always joke and say my cakes have been trucker tested and approved.

After coming up with an amazing cake recipe, my daughter and I decided to open a bakery. Our baking skills were not just requested by friends and family but by clients who wanted to make their events sweeter. We planted our bakery in downtown Krum, we flourished for a while but then decided that we wanted to pursue much more than baking cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and sweets. Rather, we wanted to make a difference in our community. So, we took the first step of closing our storefront and moving online to start a new chapter for our business and family.

Unlike the first spark of my passion, I intend on pursuing our future as not only a career but as my life passion. Our future is based on a vision of community, family, and belonging, somewhere everyone in all stages of life can sit down for a drink, a treat, and enjoy the scenery. We hope to build community here with pumpkin patches and Christmas wonderlands. My family currently resides on 200 + acres of land that we plan on turning into a market filled with a bakery, farm-to-market store, restaurant, petting zoo and so much more.

As of today, Barnett Sweets + Co. is an online bakery that takes custom sweets orders with a pick-up location just a five-minute beautiful countryside drive away from downtown Krum. We are open for pick-up 24 hours, seven days a week for convenience in your everyday schedule. I have spent 30 years mastering the perfect cake, and I hope you get to experience that same spark I felt in high school when making my first cake and finding my passion. We plan on making your every day sweeter one treat at a time while we pursue our future, and we hope you too can become a part of it!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In our first year of opening our bakery, the pandemic hit, and as a small business, it was a struggle to stay open. We found an opportunity to provide curbside meal pick-up for families in our local market. A portion of the profits was donated to providing meals for people in our community that was struggling. Although these times were difficult, our love for our community and food began to grow in these times, allowing us to expand our passions and think of a bigger, better, and brighter future!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Barnett Sweets & Co. is an ‘online order bakery’ with a pick-up location in Krum, TX! We offer from-scratch cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and more, freshly baked with love in our kitchen here in Krum. We strive to provide the best-baked goods in the area and use only the finest quality ingredients for our recipes.

We believe any and every celebration is a great time for a sweet treat. Our cupcakes are the perfect addition for your next birthday party, thank you gift, baby shower, wedding reception, bachelorette party, bridal shower, school party, office party, holiday gift, hostess gift, and housewarming gift, and much more. Or our favorite reason – just because!

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
The biggest risk we have taken not only as a company but as a family was closing our storefront in Krum in pursuit of our next chapter. It has not only been hard for us but hard for the community to see us leave downtown, Krum. And although it is exciting to think of our future, we are just as excited to make our small business grow where it is now, as a custom order and pick-up location that can fit everyone’s needs and busy schedules!
