Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelan Johnson.
Hi Katelan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I really got into fashion when I decided to open up my own online clothing boutique called Novah Rose. I started researching the latest and upcoming fashion trends in 2019 and launched my clothing store in 2020. Being a small business and having a small budget I had to model my own clothes and create content for my social media pages. It was definitely a learning curve. I had never modeled before nor was I very present on social media at that time. As I got more comfortable in front of the camera and creating content, I decided to post more to my personal page to help bring more awareness to my brand. I started posting consistently last year in June 2021 and my page actually grew quickly I went from 1400 followers to 15,000 by the end of that year. As my page grew, I started working with clothing brands and doing collaborations with brands. The more brands I worked with I realized I really had a passion for influencing and decided to close my business and focus solely on building my brand as fashion influencer. Fast forward to today I’ve had the chance to work with some amazing brands including Fashion Nova, Puma, Boohoo, Rebdolls, and several others! I have so many more brands I aspire to work with and want to work on getting into campaign modeling in the future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle with social media is we are our own worst critics. And with so many established influencers out there, it’s easy to get caught up in the comparison of it all. Also, nothing you see on social media is real we all take an abundance of pictures just to get that perfect one to post. We rarely see what it took to get to the finished product.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a fashion content creator. I create content for different clothing brands. In the form of pictures, OOTD videos, and try-on hauls. I also create content for brands solely for use on their website. I’m proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and putting myself out there on social media. People can be very rude and inconsiderate on social media so to put yourself out there can be intimidating at times. I’m also proud of how far my content has come in this last year it had gotten so much better than when I first started and I’m always getting better. I think there is a lot that sets me apart in this industry. One being a midsize fashion influencer. I bridge that gap between not being a regular size but also not being plus size. It was a real grey area in the fashion industry and I feel like it’s finally growing and midsize ranges are getting more recognition. I also carry myself very confidently and I think that is another thing that makes me stand out. I get girls reaching out to me about it all the time and how I have inspired them to love their shape and it’s messages like that that really keep me going.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To celebrate all your small wins. We focus so much on our destination at times we forget that the journey itself is supposed to be fun! I always try to remind myself how great I’m doing and to celebrate how far I’ve come I feel we don’t do that enough for ourselves
